‘Loki’ Episode Two Review: A Mystery Opponent Has Entered The Arena

The second episode of Loki premiered on Disney+ today and it looks like we’re getting close to glory. Sorry, I know that was cheesy, but I viewed this second episode as a bit of a filler episode. It was leading up to what’s going to happen next and the way the episode ended, it looks like the restraints are finally going to be lifted off Loki. Hopefully.

To Be Honest

While I thought episode one was incredibly strong, I have to admit that episode two fell a little short for me. It seems that the people behind this show took what Taika Waititi did in Thor Ragnarok and felt that they could make Loki more humorous. The thing, though; is, Waititi knew how to toe the line between epicness and humor. The Loki in that movie was funny, but also felt like the perfect growth for Loki in the MCU. The Loki of the show Loki is supposed to be 2012 Loki and maybe they’re trying to say that this was how Loki was all along, but it just feels a little campy to me. I am not a fan of Thor The Dark World, but that Loki was the perfect bridge between Loki in 2012 and Ragnorak. This quick jump to campyness fells…oddly displaced.

Take The Training Wheels Off

The show is called Loki and I feel that episode two was more so about Mobius and less about Loki. As if they are unsure of what to do with the actually titular character. I’m hoping that the end of this episode is evidence that we’re finally going to see Tom Hiddleston stretch his legs as this character and not be reduced to some punching bag that’s only there for others to make degrading jokes about. This is Loki – we’ve seen him be dangerous and cunning and all we got in episode two was the opposite of that. One who is predictable and clumsy. I don’t know, I didn’t like seeing Loki like this. I wanted more.

Rating: 3/5

I don’t mean to lean to the negative. This was my most anticipated show and Loki still holds the “favorite MCU character” spot for me. I have a Loki tattoo for crying out loud. But, I don’t know – episode two fell short for me. I’m, of course; going to keep watching and I’m hoping we see the “burn this place to the ground” Loki that was teased in the Super Bowl teaser last year.
