Loki is back! Disney Plus just premiered its first episode of its Tom Hiddleston-led show. For a review of the first episode, make sure you’re checking out our weekly review – the Marvel Cinematic Review – on YouTube!
In a recent press junket with Kevin Feige, Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, and more, the cast and those behind the scenes spoke about this new chapter for the MCU character. We first met Hiddleston as Loki in the first Thor and for several films after, Loki was the villain. A complicated villain albeit. Then, we saw the development of Loki where he went from a bad guy to almost [I would say] an anti-hero.
When asked about Loki and whether or not they knew if he would be getting his own show after Avengers: Endgame, Kevin Feige responded:
“Tom, I think we did not know it when we shot Infinity War. But I think we did know it when we shot Endgame is my-is my recollection of it. Um, what that meant and where that specifically would go, we didn’t know. Um, but one of my favorite things coming out of Endgame was people saying, um, that we forget to tie up the loose end of Loki. Loki just disappears and we forgot to mention what happens to him at the end of that movie.”
Feige continued:
“And, at that point, we did know that there was Disney+ coming and the show coming. It became very exciting to, uh, to make people-people wait until we figured out what the show would be.”
Hiddleston was then asked what he thought of the opportunity to extend the story of Loki:
“What I love about the series is Loki is stripped of everything that’s familiar to him. Thor is not close by. Um, Asgard seems some distance away. The Avengers, uh, for the time being, um, aren’t in sight. He’s stripped of his status and his power. And, if you take all those things that Loki has used to identify himself over the last six movies, what remains of Loki? Who is he, um, within or outside all of those things? And I think those questions became, for all of us, really fascinating to ask. What makes Loki Loki?”
If you’ve watched the first episode of Loki, you already have seen the great chemistry between Owen Wilson’s Mobius and Hiddleston’s Loki. Whoever thought we’d get Wilson in the MCU? When asked how it felt to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Wilson explained:
“Well, it’s exciting to be a part of it. Um, you know, with just kind of seeing the trailer start to come out and how excited people get. And, um, it’s really, you know, I kind of talked about how I’ve worked on a lot of things. But the-sort of the secrecy sort of surrounding this, I didn’t quite understand until, uh, I saw that it’s just so much, uh-the fan base is so kind of revved up and passionate. And Marvel’s just so kind of committed to, uh, trying to surprise people. So, then you kind of get into it.”
We’re excited for the rest of the Loki show. We’ve already seen how great other actors/characters are, such as Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ravonna Renslayer, Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B-15, and Eugene Cordero as Casey. The first season of Loki looks incredibly promising – what did you think of episode one?
