Looking Back At The Oscars 2003 Best Picture Nominees

Group of fantasy characters ready for battle, featuring a swordsman, wizard, archer, and two hobbits.

Although we enjoy the Academy Awards every year, we always walk away with a sour taste in our mouths. Today I will continue my series on the Oscar winners. I will share my thoughts on who won, who should’ve won and who should’ve been nominated.

The first race I am going to tackle is the 2003 Best Picture race.

Here were the 5 films nominated for Best Picture.

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
  • Lost in Translation
  • Master and Commander
  • Mystic River
  • Seabiscuit

Who Won?

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and the film took home all 11 Oscars it was nominated for. They are tied with Ben-Hur (1959) and the Titanic (1997) for most Oscar wins of all time.

Gandalf and Aragorn lead the World of Men against Sauron’s army to draw his gaze from Frodo and Sam as they approach Mount Doom with the One Ring.

Who Should Have Won?: Lost in Translation

I will prefix by saying I have never seen a single one of the Lord of the Rings movies.

Sofia Coppola was awarded an Oscar for her writing on this tremendous screenplay. BUT folks she was just robbed on Oscar night as this film SHOULD HAVE won Best Picture and Best Director. Not only was her writing perfectly crafted but her directing of this film was some of the best we have ever seen. The story of two lost souls trying to find meaning in this little thing we call life. The movie was relatable, it was moving and it was breathtaking.

Who Should Have Been Nominated?: Phone Booth

This film never gets the credit it deserves. The film was an intense thriller with a fantastic performance from Collin Farrell. The film kept you on the edge of your seat the entire time, it was like you couldn’t breathe for the entirety of the film. The supporting players in the film (Kiefer Sutherland & Forest Whitaker) were both keys in making this film work. The writing was good, the acting was good and it should have been in the conversation.

Who would you have picked as the winner? And what film was missing from being nominated?
