Looking Back At The Oscars 2008 Best Picture Nominees

Although we enjoy the Academy Awards every year, we always walk away with a sour taste in our mouths. Today I will continue my series on the Oscar winners. I will share my thoughts on who won, who should’ve won and who should’ve been nominated.

The first race I am going to tackle is the 2008 Best Picture race.

Here were the 5 films nominated for Best Picture.

  • Slumdog Millionaire
  • Frost/Nixon
  • Milk
  • The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
  • The Reader

Who Won?

A Mumbai teenager reflects on his life after being accused of cheating on the Indian version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”.

Slumdog Millionaire was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and taking home 8 Oscars including Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Picture.

Who Should Have Won? Slumdog Millionaire

This screenplay is so good. The writing within this film and the intensity really push you to the brink of insanity as you are watching. This was our introduction of Dev Patel whose performance was the heartbeat of this film. Without his performance or how good he was in his role of Jamal, we don’t see this film succeed on the same level.

Who Should Have Been Nominated? The Dark Knight & The Wrestler

Yes, I picked two. A comeback story if directed the right way is one that will live with you for days after watching it. The Wrestler has lived with me for YEARS after watching it. It may have to do with being a former professional wrestler but Mickey Rourke’s performance gives you ALL the feels.

Look. I understand the Academy has a thing for Comic Books and not nominating but in 2008 they were faced with one problem. His name was Heath Ledger who transformed into the Joker giving one of the best performances in the history film. The film as a collective whole was strong with a great performance from Aaron Eckhart as Two-Face, and of course Bale as Batman. It still stands the test of time as one of the best CBM ever made.

Who would you have picked as the winner? And what film was missing from being nominated?
