Looking Back At The Oscars 2014 Best Picture Nominees

Although we enjoy the Academy Awards every year, we always walk away with a sour taste in our mouths. Today I will continue my series on the Oscar winners. I will share my thoughts on who won, who should’ve won and who should’ve been nominated.

The first race I am going to tackle is the 2014 Best Picture race.

Here were the 8 films nominated for Best Picture.

  • Birdman
  • American Sniper
  • Boyhood
  • The Grand Budapest Hotel
  • The Imitation Game
  • Selma
  • The Theory of Everything
  • Whiplash

Who Won?

A washed-up superhero actor attempts to revive his fading career by writing, directing, and starring in a Broadway production.

Birdman was nominated for 9 Academy Awards and the film took home 4 Oscar trophies including Best Director and Best Picture.

Who Should Have Won?: Whiplash

Whiplash was nominated for 5 Academy Awards and took home 3 Oscar trophies.

Honestly, I was more than okay with Birdman winning the top prize as the film is really good but I thought Whiplash was a better film. The acting, the directing, the score, the stylistic ruthlessness that J.K. Simmons brought to the big-screen was perfect.

J.K. Simmons gave us one of the best performances from an antagonist in the history of film. You truly loathed and hate Fletcher and wanted nothing but bad things to happen to that man.

Chazelle came out the game swinging and only got better with La La Land but I felt like this film should’ve been the one to hoist the Best Picture Oscar.

Who Should Have Been Nominated?: Gone Girl

Gone Girl was nominated for ONE just ONE Academy Award. Obviously the right choice was made as Rosamund Pike was BRILLIANT in this film as Amy Dunne.

This film was a thriller of all thrillers, I absolutely loved Gillian Flynn’s screenplay and the way Fincher gave it to us on the big-screen was remarkable. The film was dark, gloomy and felt like it was ripped right from the headlines and as you watch the movie unfold you truly start to question everything that is going on.

The chemistry of Amy & Nick Dunne was a vital part of this film and Pike/Affleck was a perfect combination as the duo. I swear at several different instances of the film you weren’t sure who you hate more of the two. The film was remarkable with an ending that just blew your mind.

Honorable Mention: Foxcatcher – This was a hard choice between these two films but Foxcatcher is SO good.

Who would you have picked as the winner? And what film was missing from being nominated?
