And in the latest MCU movie, Avengers: Endgame, we saw a comic-book storyline come to life when Steve Rogers decided to pass the mantle as he handed his Captain America shield to Sam. This definitely opens up some doors as to what we can expect in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as his series on the upcoming streaming service Disney+.
In a recent interview, Mackie commented on being given the shield:
“It’s like being handed the Oscar, for me. For Chris to be like: ‘Here’s the shield’, that’s like ‘and Best Actor goes to’…”
“It means a lot for my sons to be able to see Captain America as a black dude. That means a lot, to me. And to be that dude for my sons. So that thank you, that moment, wasn’t just about ‘Hey, we’re acting’. It’s like a lot of things have gone right twenty years in this business and for that to happen.”
Mackie was asked when he thought that it’d sink in that he is now the new Captain America, to which he responded:
“I think once I see the suit, I haven’t seen it. So once I see the suit, once we start this Disney+ series then I think it’ll be real…It’ll be real when I see it.”
It’ll be really exciting to see the direction of his series on Disney+ with The Winter Soldier. In the meantime, you can find Mackie also taking up the mantle as Takeshi Kovacs from Joel Kinnaman in Netflix’s Altered Carbon.
