Marvel’s Kevin Feige Explains Why Jack Kirby’s ‘The Eternals’ Is A Perfect Vehicle For Marvel Studios

Marvel’s success at bringing to the attention of audiences many of their long established characters is well documented. Between The Hulk, Iron Man, Captain AmericaThor, The Avengers, and so many others, they have basically been met with acceptance and box office success. Now they will be making the attempt to introduce film goers to a set of characters who are not so well known when Jack Kirby’s The Eternals begin production sometime in early 2019.

In reference to this upcoming film, Marvel head Kevin Feige, in a discussion with Bionic Buzz explained why he felt The Eternals were perfect for the MCU despite that many fans are not familiar with the characters.

You’re reaction about not being familiar with the Eternals is perfect, because most people weren’t familiar with Guardians [of the Galaxy] and believe it or not there were people that were not familiar with Avengers or with Iron Man. So for us, its finding great stories whether people have heard of them or not and bring them to the big screen in as amazing a way as we can.

Far be it from me to argue with someone with the track record of Feige or Marvel Studios, but the name recognition of his previous efforts and this new endeavor are basically night and day. Even if you’re not an avid comic book follower, you probably heard of the Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man, or Thor. The same cannot be said for The Eternals unless you are an AVID comic book reader or a comic historian.

For those unfamiliar, The Eternals were created by Jack Kirby in 1976 for Marvel Comics following his brief stint with DC Comics. During his brief time at DC Comics, Kirby created a title called the New Gods, but it was canceled before Kirby could give the title its due diligence. Upon his return to Marvel, he created The Eternals which was in many ways very similar to the New Gods. Unfortunately, like his DC title, it also failed to find an audience and again was canceled before Kirby could complete his tale. It was revamped a couple of times, once in 1985 and again in 2006 with Neil Gaiman and John Romita, Jr. who brought it into a more modern interpretation.

So who are The Eternals? They are a long-lived, godlike race of beings that were created on Earth by a group of beings called the Celestials. To counter balance the Eternals, The Celestials also created the Deviants, a monstrous race whose goal is to do harm to humanity while the Eternals seek to protect it.

So, I have to ask: How many of our readers are actually aware of who the Eternals are? If you are familiar with them, how do you think Marvel will bring them to be accepted by the general movie audience who might not know the characters? Share your opinions with us at GVNation.
