With over 24 hours having passed since the announcement of Mary Elizabeth Winstead as the DC Extended Universe’s version of Huntress, fans have had a chance to digest how they think she will fill the role. Now, thanks to an interview with The Wrap, we have an idea how the actress will take on the role and what she knew about the character going in.
In her interview, Winstead discussed the role as Helena Bertinelli/Huntress in the upcoming Birds of Prey movie, and how she’ll prepare herself for the part.
I’m going to start training, and I’ll be learning how to shoot a bow and arrow, too — which is new for me,” Winstead revealed.
Since playing the part of Ramona Flowers in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Winstead has become a familiar face to fans. She explained what about the character of the Huntress ultimately drew her interest in the upcoming film despite not being an avid comic book reader in her past.
I can’t say that I was a huge comic book reader,” Winstead explained. “But when I met with Cathy Yan, who’s directing the film, and learned kind of the back story of the character, I was really interested. It’s a really strong, kind of emotional place to start from for a superhero character. I won’t go into too much detail now, but I think it’s interesting and an opportunity to do something cool with this kind of character.
For those not steeped in the lore of the character, Helena was the daughter of one of Gotham’s main mafia bosses, who turns to the life of a vigilante after her family is murdered. It is during this time that she joined up with Batgirl and the Black Canary. It was these three that made up the core of the Birds of Prey. Of those three, Helena was occasionally guilty of some impulsive and violent behavior however, she has played the role of heroine on many different occasions as well.
In Margot Robbie’s Birds of Prey, Winstead’s Huntress will be joining forces with Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Renee Montoya, and Cassandra Cain, in order to take down the mob boss Black Mask. Being with the other actresses and a female director and just the whole energy behind this is so unique, so I’m really happy about that.
