Matthew Vaughn Had Plans For An X-Men Film That Would Introduce A Younger Wolverine

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”23234″ img_size=”900×600″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Next week the final X-Men film in the Fox Marvel universe will arrive in theaters with X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Fox has delivered some really great X-Men films from X2 to First Class, from Logan to Days of Future Past. The Fox X-Men universe helped launch the successful Deadpool franchise.

During this run it’s with out question that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has been the standout and breakout character of the franchise. He played the character for so long that it’s hard to imagine anyone else playing him. We for sure will see a new actor play the role now that Disney has the rights back to the X-Men. But there was a time not long ago when First Class director, Matthew Vaughn, thought about casting someone younger.

In an interview with ComingSoon, Vaughn revealed that he originally was signed on for three X-Men films. Vaughn was going to direct Last Stand which did not work out but he retuned for First Class and was going to direct the follow up film. Fox wanted to go with Days of Future Past and this promoted Vaughn to leave the franchise. It was the film after First Class that Vaughn was going to introduce a younger Wolverine.

“That’s one of the reasons I didn’t continue, because they didn’t listen to me. My plan was First Class, then second film was new young Wolverine in the 70s to continue those characters, my version of the X-Men. So you’d really get to know all of them, and my finale was gonna be Days of Future Past. That was gonna be my number three where you bring them all… because what’s bigger than bringing in McKellen and Michael and Stewart and James and bringing them all together?”

Who would Vaughn have chosen for his Wolverine? Well it’s someone fan casted often for the role. Here is a hint – he now plays Venom!

“When I finished the Days of Future Past script with it ready to go I looked at it and said, “I really think it would be fun to cast Tom Hardy or someone as the young Wolverine and then bring it all together at the end.” Fox read Days of Future Past and went “Oh, this is too good! We’re doing it now!” And I said, “Well what do you do next? Trust me you’ve got nowhere to go.” Then they did Apocalypse and it’s like… If you flip that ’round even it would have been better. Hollywood doesn’t understand pacing. Their executives are driving 100 miles-per-hour looking in the rear-view mirror and not understanding why they crash.”

It definitely sounds like Fox put the cart before the horse and missed out on what could have been an epic X-Men trilogy from Matthew Vaughn. I hate that we never got to see it come to life. Perhaps Fox was not keen on another actor coming in as Wolverine while Hugh was still willing to portray the character. Days of Future Past is a great film in my opinion and I’m happy the way it turned out. This will always be one of those big what if moments.

What do you think about this information? Would you have been fine with a new Wolverine being cast or are you happy with the way things turned out?
