Ming-Na Wen, BD Wong, and Matthew Rhys join ‘Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai’

News at last has come for ‘Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai‘, the animated prequel to the classic Chris Columbus horror/comedy film ‘Gremlins’ which came out in 1984. According to Variety, Ming-Na Wen (The Mandalorian, Mulan), BD Wong (Mr. Robot, Jurassic World), James Hong (Big Trouble in Little China), and Matthew Rhys (The Americans) have been added as voice actors for the HBO Max series.

The series will be 10 episodes and the current synopsis is as follows:

The story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing (future mysterious shop keeper in ‘Gremlins), met the young Mogwai called Gizmo. Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese Folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.

Izaac Wang will be voicing Sam Wing. Sam’s mother will be voiced by Wen and his father will be voiced by Wong. The mother is described as a doctor of Chinese medicine who is “resourceful, slyly funny and fiercely protective of her family”. His dad on the other hand is described as a calm rock. The Grandfather will be voiced by Hong and claims to have gone on grand adventures and knows the true secrets of the Mogwai. Rhys will be voicing the antagonist, Riley Greene, a power-hungry English industrialist and treasure hunter who wields black magic.

Tze Chun (Gotham, Once Upon a Time) will serve as showrunner and writer as well as co-producing the series. Darry Frank and Justin Falvey (From Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television) will executive produce alongside Sam Register after all having worked together on ‘Animaniacs’. Ambling will be producing in association with Warner Bros. Animation.
