Some Law & Order shows are more successful than others. While Trial by Jury and Los Angeles only had one season, Criminal Intent had ten, the original Law & Order had 20, and the current show Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is going strong into its twentieth season with no signs of stopping. Even the Chicago spinoffs from Dick Wolf, such as Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, and Chicago Med are all doing well. So, it couldn’t be a more perfect time to introduce another spin-off show on NBC, which will be Law & Order: Hate Crimes.
NBC has ordered thirteen episodes, which will be based off of real-life hate crimes. According to THR, the detectives on this squad work under the SVU ad will occasionally borrow from them during their investigations. Crossovers, anyone?
“As with all of my crime shows, I want to depict what’s really going on in our cities and shine a light on the wide-ranging victims and show that justice can prevail,” Wolf said. “Twenty years ago when SVU began, very few people felt comfortable coming forward and reporting these crimes, but when you bring the stories into people’s living rooms — with characters as empathetic as Olivia Benson — a real dialogue can begin. That’s what I hope we can do with this new show in a world where hate crimes have reached an egregious level.”
Hate Crimes will be introduced during Law & Order: SVU’s upcoming twentieth season, meaning we probably won’t see Hate Crimes until 2019.
