Another title of George R.R. Martin’s is being adapted into a live-action story. The acclaimed author’s 1979 novelette Sandkings is currently in development at Netflix. Director Gore Verbinski is teaming up with the original Utopia creator Dennis Kelly for this project.
Verbinski revealed this in an interview recently when asked about projects he’s working on:
“One of the screenplays is based on a George R.R. Martin short story called Sandkings, which is this brilliant little twisted short story that I love. And I’m working with a great writer, Dennis Kelly, who wrote the original [Utopia]… The British original series is brilliant. And Dennis is doing the adaptation, so I’m kind of excited about that.”
John Baldecchi will produce Sandkings under his Digital Riot Media banner. Sandkings follows a character named Simon Kress. Kress is a “wealthy playboy” who is into collecting exotic and often dangerous animals. He stumbles upon a mysterious place called Wo & Shade one day. This is where he purchases a terrarium that’s filled up four colonies of creatures that are called sandkings. The sandkings grow to fill up whatever environment they’re in. Each colony has a large female which is called a maw. The maw controls “numerous insect-like mobiles” via telepathy.
While Sandkings sounds like something Stephen King would do, the 1979 novelette is the only story of Martin’s to have won a Hugo and Nebula award. What do you think about Sandkings being adapted by Netflix?
