For the week of September 15th, we have some incredible releases making their way to our shelves. This week, we spotlight the 4K UHD Blu-Ray debut of two major cult horror films from some of the most impressive boutique labels in the game. Celluloid Dreams returns with the long-awaited release of giallo classic The Black Belly of the Tarantula from a meticulous 4K restoration of the Original Camera Negative in HDR10. The release is presented in your choice of two aspect ratios, a “Grindhouse” version of the film, and with a slew of special features, such as a commentary track, interviews, and more. Ignite Films follows up their lauded 4K UHD release of Re-Animator with the beloved sequel Bride of Re-Animator from a director-approved 4K restoration in Dolby Vision with a choice of three audio tracks. The release comes with multiple commentary tracks, interviews, an hour-long documentary, and more.
In the world of new theatrical films making their way home, Bleecker Street has the queer disaster parody film Stop! That! Train! starring RuPaul on Blu-Ray with a commentary track and featurettes. If you want something a bit more action-packed, Liongate has the extremely brutal action revenge tale The Furious on 4K UHD Blu-Ray in Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos audio. The release comes with featurettes and deleted scenes. The company also has you covered with action from multiple decades with the release of the Rambo 5-Film 4K UHD Collection with the Sylvester Stallone films presented in Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos and the original lossless audio tracks. If you want more Stallone, you can check out Tulsa King: Season 3 on Blu-Ray from Paramount, featuring all ten episodes from the third outing.
Alliance Entertainment has a couple of throwback movies debuting on Blu-Ray, including the Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger crime comedy Nadine. They also have the family adventure The Borrowers starring Jim Broadbent making its Blu-Ray debut. Neither of these releases include supplemental features.
Arrow Video has an exciting new sublabel as Toy Robot Video debuts with a packed slate this month. We start out with the fantasy adventure adaptation Masters of the Universe starring Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella on 4K UHD Blu-Ray. The film is presented in Dolby Vision and includes a new Preview Cut of the film, a commentary track, interviews, and more. We also have the sci-fi sequel Guyver 2: Dark Hero debuting on Blu-Ray in both the original form and a new enhanced version with updated effects. The film is presented with three commentary tracks, interviews, and more.
The new label also has a modern horror outing with Marshmallow on Blu-Ray with a commentary track, deleted scenes, interviews, and short films. We also have a double dose of Japanese films featuring Hiroyuki Sanada with Ninja Wars and Roaring Fire on Blu-Ray. These individual releases include commentary tracks, interviews, and more.
The fine individuals at Deaf Crocodile continue to be saviors of overlooked and unconventional cinema with an eclectic duo. First up, we have the animated cat melodrama Hayop Ka! from director Avid Liongoren on Blu-Ray with a commentary track, interviews, short film, and visual essay. It wouldn’t be a Deaf Crocodile slate without something truly unique, like the staggering glove-puppet wuxia film Demigod: The Legend Begins on Blu-Ray with a commentary track, a visual essay, featurettes, and more.
The heroes at The Criterion Collection continue to deliver quality work with a pair of modern dramas looking to the politics of the past to understand our present. We begin with recent Oscar-nominee The Secret Agent starring Wagner Moura on 4K UHD Blu-Ray with Dolby Vision. The release not only comes with documentaries, visual essays, interviews, and more, but it includes the feature Pictures of Ghosts from director Kleber Mendonça Filho in HD. There is also the Soviet drama Two Prosecutors on Blu-Ray that follows the struggles of a political prisoner during Joseph Stalin’s ongoing Great Purge. The release comes with an interview with director Sergei Loznitsa.
