TheWrap had reported that Gunn was being eyed as the possible director for Suicide Squad 2. The original movie had premiered in 2016 and featured some of the best of the worst in DC’s rogue gallery, teaming up to fight against evil as they’re the only ones crazy enough to do so. The film may have received mixed reviews, but a sequel is happening, and the actors have been preparing.
One of Suicide Squad’s writers felt that Gunn’s previous work with Guardians of the Galaxy made him perfect for the role and I have to agree with Rob Williams on this one. According to sources, Gunn’s “sequel” will be a new take on the characters and with such a great director at the helm of the project, I believe this could really help the DCEU, as well as the Suicide Squad franchise.
FWIW – after writing something like 50 issues of Suicide Squad – that first Guardians movie pretty much tonally nailed what the Squad should be. With more villainy, yes. But that's a volume dial switch from 9 to 10, really. It's ALL about character.
