Opinion: The Best Car Tech In Movies

It’s okay if you’re just a little mad that Marty McFly’s Delorean created the unrealistic expectation that 1) time travel is a thing, and 2) that banana peels would get you from A to B. While the DeLorean company got an absurd amount of exposure from the Back to the Future franchise, it only led to 85 replicas of the film’s car being built. DMC went bankrupt in 1983, and it seemed like the cult classic car was doomed. That was until 2017, when DMC Texas caused a mass revival by announcing that they would roll out turn-key DeLorean replicas to the tune of $140,000, which undoubtedly started the rumor of a Back to the Future 4. A bit steep some might say, but the DeLorean isn’t the only film car fans would shell out big cash for.

You Can’t Have A Car Tech List Without The Batmobile

The Dark Knight’s ride might be a bigger drawcard to the franchise than Ben Affleck, and that is because the batmobile has more gadgets that Bruce Wayne has friends. Also, the batmobile’s biggest movie moment in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) wasn’t a tear-jerking “For Martha” moment. A lot of thought went into this particular model, which featured a rugged exterior, a Gatling gun, and an electrified skin deterrent that sent out a nasty shock wave. As the main prototype was deemed too valuable, the production team built three in order to shoot scenes that involved crashing and flipping. For comic book fans, there is an entire marketplace that sells batmobile replicas at Bruce Wayne prices (think $1,6 million for some). Technically, you won’t have all that tech, but you can still pretend.

Just Going Out For A Truck, Dear

When you’re in the market for a new truck and comparing all the options, you weigh the options through features and benefits. A list of truck benefits should at least include a sizeable payload capacity, some towing power, and an interior that justifies the gas money to get from A to B. But what if that truck also happens to have a mission on Earth to destroy a world-killer? The truck used to portray Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise was sold on auction to the highest bidder. While slightly bigger than a pickup truck, it will undoubtedly spark up interesting conversation if used as a regular mode of transport. Seeing that it has a VIN and title and is in working condition, there’s no reason not to.

Even Bond Gets On The List

Sure, there’s the Aston Martin in Casino Royale (2006) with the mini-hospital that conveniently counters the poison Bond just ingested, but that’s not the Bond car that makes fans green with envy. Die Another Day (2002) might have been considered a Bond franchise failure despite its box office success, but it does boast an over-the-top gadget-laden car that’s invisible. Who wouldn’t want an invisible car?

Thanks to massive fandoms, owning a cult-classic film car might not be pie-in-the-sky after all. While these cars might not have all the gadgetry they’re famous for, your new sweet ride will definitely garner enough attention to be the perfect conversation starter.
