A time of tension. Of rioting in the streets. A time of change. In Oakland, California, 1968, The Black Panthers led by Huey Newton (Marcus Chong, The Matrix) and Bobby Seale (Courtney B. Vance, The Preacher’s Wife) have armed themselves and are ready to fight for freedom. To the people, they’re heroes, but to the FBI they’re Public Enemy Number One. Now the Feds will do everything they can – on the right or wrong side of the law – to bring them down.
Written by legendary filmmaker and author Melvin Van Peebles (Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song), based on his own novel ,and directed by Mario Van Peebles (New Jack City, Posse), Panther features an all-star cast including Kadeem Hardison (Drive), Bokeem Woodbine (Queen & Slim), Joe Don Baker (GoldenEye), Angela Bassett (Black Panther), Chris Tucker (Rush Hour), Chris Rock (The Longest Yard), James Le Gros (Guncrazy), M. Emmet Walsh (Blood Simple), Robert Culp (“I Spy”), James Russo (Django Unchained), Bobby Brown (Ghostbusters II) and Tyrin Turner (Menace II Society).

Video Quality
Panther makes its Blu-Ray debut courtesy of MVD Entertainment as a part of the Marquee Collection with a digital AVC encoded 1080p transfer in its original aspect ratio. While no specifics have been given concerning the source of the transfer, this appears to be derived from a very solid older master that has been provided by MGM. Instances of age related wear and tear such as nicks and scratches do show up, but overall clarity and detail is quite a sight to see given the quality of the source material. This transfer retains the natural film grain of the presentation with only a few environments looking a bit overly coarse.
Scenes set in the bright daytime are especially dynamic with loads of detail and wonderful color saturation. The smaller issues come during shadowy environments which can appear a bit soft and lack fine detail. The picture provides a great amount of depth, and close-up shots showcase an admirable amount of subtle texture. Skin tones are natural and consistent with facial features easily noticeable. Black levels get a bit murky in a few points, but by and large it allows for a more stable image. This presentation is an excellent effort that treats the film with respect. .
Audio Quality
This new Blu-Ray comes with a LPCM 2.0 mix that really brings this film to life. It features a very effective implementation of music which elevates the thematic resonance of certain events. As these tunes radiate through the room, you are treated to a soundscape defined by its clarity and overall fidelity. The dialogue likewise holds up favorably, coming through perfectly clear without being stepped on by competing elements. The environmental sound effects are distinguished nicely from the clamoring of the neighborhood residents to certain altercations. The track avoids instances of age related wear and tear or distortion. This is a track that represents the film without complaint. Optional English subtitles are provided on this disc.

Final Thoughts
Panther is a very engaging portrait of a revolutionary time which sadly resonates just as strongly today as the day in which it was made. The lens into this group feels as if it could be slightly skewed, but nothing registers as disingenuous in its portrayal. If the world has taught us anything, it is that the events in this film can and will happen if those in power have the opportunity. The performances in this one are really terrific across the board, and Mario Van Peebles brings a palpable sense of energy to his direction. MVD Entertainment has provided a Blu-Ray with a lovely A/V presentation but almost nothing in the way of special features. If you find the subject of the Black Panther party to be of particular interest, this is well worth a watch. Recommended
Panther is currently available to purchase on Blu-Ray and DVD.

Dillon is most comfortable sitting around in a theatre all day watching both big budget and independent movies.
