‘Peacemaker’ Episode Six Review: The Show That Keeps Kicking Ass and Tugging At Heartstrings

I know, I know – I’m late in writing this review. Although I look forward to Peacemaker every week, I feel like life is constantly preventing me from watching this great show on Thursdays. Every week, I look forward to seeing where else this show goes. Then I remember that there’s only two episodes left and suddenly I want to slow time, because what am I supposed to do after February 17th when the eighth and final episode airs?

SPOILERS

Anyway, let’s talk about episode six. This was a strong episode that really prepares the viewers for the final stretch aka the last two episodes. In the previous episode, we found out that Chukwudi Iwuji’s character Murn was in fact a part of the Butterflies from the mysterious Project Butterfly. What I especially liked about how this reveal was handled was how almost nonchalant it was. While it originally looked like Murn may hurt Danielle Brooks’ Leota, it became a really meaningful scene that also led to a pretty hilarious scene between the team. For some reason, I really feel like Butterly-Murn is telling the truth and doesn’t have any ill intentions. It’ll be interesting how this continues to play out, considering the rest of the Butterflies are looking for blood.

Speaking about the Butterflies, I have to just come out and say that they made for one of my favorite scenes in this episode. It’s been a few days since the episode came out, so I feel pretty confident in diving slightly into spoilers here. If you haven’t seen the latest episode of Peacemaker – spoilers: there’s spoilers ahead.

More Spoilers

My favorite sequence in this episode consisted of a newly Butterfly-turned Sophie Song leading an army of Butterflies into the police station to take over and Peacemaker’s dad Auggie rallying his troops and suiting up. This sequence happened all to the beat of Monster by Reckless Love. Which, I feel like was a perfectly picked song. Gunn, like the likes of Quentin Tarantino; has a knack for great music in his projects. Plus, I’m never going to complain when hair metal is brought back into fashion (lovely scene at the end with Peacemaker playing the piano chords to Motley Crue’s Home Sweet Home). Back to this sequence – I loved it. It really was edited and framed well and was an intense showcase of all of the danger that is to come. Not only from literal alien butterflies but from crazy Neo-Nazis.

Rating: 5/5

I think the Peacemaker series is really showcasing John Cena’s acting abilities. Even in little bursts, he’s able to display so much emotion and depth. While at times he’s clearly trying to put on a show, Cena humanizes this character and offers more than just what we got in The Suicide Squad. I think Cena as Peacemaker is one of the best things in DC and one of the most enjoyable things to watch on TV right now.
