Pokemon Let’s Go: A Week in Review

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”10826″ img_size=”1000×500″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]A week has come and gone since Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee released and I can safely say that it brought the nostalgia train rolling in. It was the first Pokemon game in a long time to bring back the excitement of waiting throughout the day to be able to pick up my copy, ripping the plastic off, and sticking it into my system. A feeling that I had not gotten since Pokemon Gold and Silver while playing with my older brother.

Having bought Let’s Go Pikachu, the first thing that I realized was how stinking cute the little creature could be. The game did a good job at making you attached to your companion. I often found myself stopping just so that I could pet his adorable head and belly, earning a slap of his paw when my finger would reach too far to his tail or ears. The cut scenes were welcomed and brought a sense of involvement to the story that I had not often felt since getting older and losing the same imagination of a child.

A welcome change was getting to have the wild Pokemon in the over-world. It brought the scenery to life, especially when going into the decaying Pokemon Mansion and having so many rattata running around me. The imagery of how old and abandoned the place was that it had literal rat Pokemon running around in hoards was very vivid. It also made the game play feel less tedious than constantly running into 50 pidgeys before even  reaching Viridian City.

Possibly my only gripe was the catching mechanism. I understood where Game Freak came from by trying to make the experience more involved, but it fell slightly short. Often times I would find myself wishing that I could battle the Pokemon and then simply hit A to throw my pokeball, especially when laying in bed late at night. Though I can hit A when in hand-held mode, the player still has to move it in the direction of where the Pokemon. This has also been a vocal concern of many disabled players who lack mobility to be doing such actions. It would have been better if it was an optional choice when catching Pokemon.

All in all, this has been the most enjoyable Pokemon game that I have played in so long. It felt like when I got Pokemon Yellow for the first time as a child. If you are a returning Pokemon fan, I think this will be a game for you.
