Recap: ‘Collision Course Part 2’: Marvel’s Agents of Shield

Last time on Marvel’s Agents of Shield

Last week ended with a convergence of all our parties. Mack and crew are on the Zephyr trying to decide whether to take out the ship arriving from Space. One problem however, Jemma and Fitz are on the ship. Of course Mack doesn’t know that. If that’s not enough, they also have Sarge’s truck charging into the breach of the Shrike tower carrying an atom bomb. No problem there as they have Deke Shaw to defuse the bomb. What could go wrong? Meanwhile, Sarge has secretly entered the Zephyr and released Jaco and Pax. That’s a lot to digest. Fortunately, that’s where Collision Course Part Two comes in. So what did we learn?

We start with Sarge as he explains his plan. Jaco and he will take over the ship’s bridge while Pax will secure the engine room. Pax asks what he is supposed to do if he runs into “that fast girl.” Jaco explains, as only he can that that: “The girl with mechanical arms can achieve abnormally high velocity. Which can be a abnormally large pain in the ass.” Sarge gives them a device that puts up a shield that would prevent Yo-Yo from penetrating it.

A Higher Purpose

Back on the Izel’s ship, Jemma and Fitz are still trying to make contact with the Shield team when they notice that the crew seems to be out of sorts. Itzel explains that she has given the crew a ‘higher purpose.” If by “higher purpose” she means she has given them all a lovely Shrike snack, she’s right about that. Izel also reassures FitzSimmons that she has no intention of given them the same purpose. She values their intelligence and has need of it. For what, she hasn’t yet revealed.

Time to Dazzle

Back on Earth, Sarge’s runaway truck is still barreling toward the slowly expanding Shrike Tower with the Atom Bomb in tow. Snow, for her part, is pretty useless as she knows nothing about the explosive except that it is “pretty” when it goes off. That means its all up to Deke. It’s time for Deke Shaw to ‘Dazzle.” God help them.

Sarge put his plans into action as he takes over the bridge, wounding Agent Diaz in the process. He set us up the device to keep Yo-Yo at bay and handcuffs Mack to keep him from doing anything “stupid.” He warns Mack if his crew doesn’t do what he commands, he would put Agent Diaz “out of her misery.” In the meantime, he tells Mack to turn the Zephyr around and waits for the explosive on his truck to do its job.

After Deke tries his best to “dazzle,” he realizes he can’t disarm the bomb. Everyone prepares to die as the truck collides with the tower.  At the last second, Daisy rushes at the bomb, using her quake powers to protect it. She theorizes that if the bomb doesn’t collide with anything, it possibly won’t go off. As the tower falls it releases hundreds of Shrike that are now flying around.

The Only Thing that Exploded was Sarge

When Sarge realizes that the bomb didn’t go off, he doesn’t take it very well. Meanwhile, Izel can somehow sense that her tower has been destroyed. He immediate reaction is to become suspicious of FitzSimmons. She accuses them of knowing she would be attacked. Jemma and Fitz report that they have no idea what she’s talking about.  They tell her they could clear everything up and gets some assistance from their friends when they get in touch with their people. Izel begrudgingly allows them to continue working although she moves the ship away from the surface just in case. She theorizes that either humans are more aggressive than she believed, or that ‘He’ is already arrived on Earth.

Still upset over the bomb’s failure, Sarge orders Davis to follow the freighter.  He looks at Mack for confirmation which infuriates Sarge even more. He reminds Davis that HE is in charge and holds a gun to Davis’ head to emphasize the point. Back in the engine room, Pax is preparing to employ their shield device when he encounters Yo-Yo.  She proves to be as problematic as he feared. With two passes, she takes his shield device, and Pax’s gun. She then engages in a fight, bloodying his nose and pinning him against the wall. He tells her that she’s too late, and they’ve already taken the bridge. Yo-Yo declares that she will take it back, but Pax says they’re prepared for her.

No One Slows us Down

Mack asks Sarge to take his people back to the surface and he can have the ship, but Sarge says it’s too late.  Mack reminds him that Snowflake is still down there and Jaco wants to go back. He and Sarge argue about her worth with Sarge reminding him that “No one slows us down.” Jaco, for his part, says that is Sarge’s philosophy, not his. The argument is cut short when Pax shows up on the other side of the shield. He has been tied up and gagged, and is mumbling for help through his gag. Jaco wants to help, but Sarge tells him not to take the bait, knowing it’s a trap.

Regardless of Sarge’s warning, Jaco disengages the shield but not before YoYo rushes by Pax, knocking him into the shield and burning his face. She gives Mack the keys to his cuffs during the exchange. As Jaco attempts to tend to Pax, Sarge shoots him and re-engages the shield. He tells Jaco to find Yo-Yo and end the stand-off. Meanwhile he wants Davis to catch Izel’s ship.

Getting the Shrike’s Attention

After Daisy prevented the explosion, May wants to see what their situation is outside of the truck. She opens the door and sees a lot of Shrike flying around.  Eventually they seem to take notice of her and start to get closer to their truck. They quickly shut the door but they are now in the crosshairs of the Shrikes. Especially when Deke informs them that the repellant device he recently repaired is broken again. The Shrike now know where they are and begin attacking the truck in earnest to get to them.

In their efforts to protect themselves, they start trying to find anything to barricade all openings in the trailer. During their search, May finds a box of the blades that Sarge’s team uses to kill the shrike.  She passes them out and reminds them to keep everything away from the bomb. As they pound against the trucks windows, Deke sees a Shrike break through a glass window and starts screaming. His open mouth made a perfect entryway for the Shrike. In what was one of the cooler scenes, May barely kills it before it enters Deke’s mouth.  “That would have shut you up for good,” she says in classic May form.

S.H.I.E.L.D 226 all around

Returning to the ship, Fitz almost has the communication system working and asks Jemma if they had changed the distress codes. She declares that fortunately, it is still the same. They hear the system turn on and she makes a call under the name S.H.I.E.L.D. 226. Davis answers her call, and also responds under the name S.H.I.E.L.D. 226. At first, Jemma thought that Davis was confused about the code. She quickly realizes that Davis is also in distress, thus his reply. Sarge, for his part, knows Izel is there and she’s listening. He takes over the conversation, much to the confusion of Fitz and Simmons, who believe they are hearing Coulson.

During Sarge and Izel’s conversation, they basically make clear their intentions to kill each other.  However, we do get some information we didn’t have before. Izel reveals  that Sarge is not his real name. Although Sarge makes it clear he’s not really hung up with names. Izel says that is because he doesn’t KNOW what his name is. She also claims that Sarge is the reason Chronica II was destroyed, as opposed to her. Sarge says he was exterminating the planet of her Shrikes. It is her contention that he was attempting to be a hero. She justifies her claim by repeating the line Sarge has used in the past. “People fantasize about doing something heroic in these situations, but in the end, they save their own skin.” She then asks him: “Whose skin are you saving now? Maybe the one you’re wearing.”

Pushing Sarge’s Buttons

Izel’s remarks have the desired effect. Sarge gets even more upset, telling her how much he can’t wait to kill her. Sensing she has touched a nerve, Izel presses her advantage and asks why. Sarge says she stole his family, the woman he loves, and his home. He then said she even stole his memories of them. Izel repudiates his claim, saying he never really HAD any memories of them. She cuts off any response by closing their communication. This only serves to further infuriate Sarge.

After her discussion with Sarge, Izel wants to know why Fitz seemed to recognize Sarge’s voice. She expresses the belief that they are somehow conspiring against her. Fitz and Simmons explain that Sarge sounds like someone they once knew, but that person is dead. Questioning their explanation, Izel believes they are lying and orders her men to escort them away. Using their Shield training, Jemma and Fitz are able to disarm the guards and escape the bridge.  Izel sends her Shrike infested minions after them forcing Fitz and Jemma to hide.

Jaco Finds Yo-Yo

Following Sarge’s orders, Jaco continues his search for elusive Yo-Yo. Using her powers, she makes two passes at him. The first to take his weapon and the second to handcuff him. Jaco expresses his admiration for the “nice trick” but breaks the handcuffs easily.  Yo-Yo prepares to engage him again, but he asks her to stop.

He tells her that Sarge is  trying to save her planet. She reminds him that in their efforts they are killing innocent people to do it. Jaco, sticking to the company line, acknowledges that sacrifices have to be made. He also assures her that they weren’t always killers and that Sarge knows what he’s doing.  Yo-Yo follows up reminds him: You were once a baker, the “runt”… what would your family want you to do?” Jaco contemplates for a moment and says: “They would want me to stop the beast that took them away from me.”

Dropping Some Weight

After his war of words with Izel, Sarge is obsessed with catching her. He tells Davis to fly faster but Davis informs him that the Zephyr is at max speed. Not satisfied with his explanation, Sarge suggests that perhaps they should drop some weight, like the crew for example. With Sarge already in an agitated state, Mack decides to push the envelope and perhaps help him over the edge.

Mack starts taunting him, reminding him that Izel got the best of him in their war of words.  Sarge tells Mack to shut up or else HE may be the dead weight they jettison. Mack continues his verbal assault telling Sarge that he just wants to help him. He appears to be having a bad day. Mack then lists his failures: His bomb didn’t explode, and his man Jaco is missing. In addition, Mack is pretty sure he will have his plane back by the end of the day. That is when Mack throws the unlocked cuffs (courtesy of Yo-Yo) at Sarge and the fight is on.

Toldja

Mack rushes him as Sarge tries to shoot. However, Mack is able to push his arm down, disarming him. The fight is fairly evenly matched in the beginning as the two of them fight all over the bridge. Davis attempts to assist, but Mack stops him and tells him to fly the plane. Eventually Mack’s greater size and strength wins out. He tells Sarge to stand down, but Sarge proves to be stubborn and refuses. At that time, Jaco shows up with Yo-Yo and tells Sarge it’s over. He again resists so Mack hits Sarge one last time to knock him out. He looks down at Sarge and tells him: “Toldja.” This echoes what Sarge had told Mack when he said the crew would follow HIS orders.

Prepping for a Rescue

After time, Sarge wakes up to find himself in the Shield containment pod.  He looks out to see Mack and his team getting ready to leave to rescue Jemma and Fitz. Sarge asks (almost pleads) to go with them. He’s reminds them that he has studied Izel for years just to have an opportunity like this. He warns them that they have no idea what they’re up against.  Yo-Yo looks at Sarge and agrees with him. She then tells him that is why they’re taking Jaco with them.

Back at the truck, the Shrike are still attempting to get into the trailer from every angle. As they realize that they will soon be over run, Daisy has an idea. She tells the others to get behind her and protect the bomb. She then opens the door to the trailer and stands back, dropping her knife meant to protect her. Inevitably, the Shrike start finding their way in and Daisy quakes them into dust until they are all gone. Astonished by what she had just witnessed, Snowflake asks if all the women on this planet are this powerful.  May smiles wryly also impressed by Daisy’s effort and tells Snowflake: “We Are.”

The Reunion

Yo-Yo, Mack, Davis, and Jaco enter the freighter very subtly by cutting a huge metal section open and dropping it loudly into the ship. As the proceed, they hear singing and Jaco identifies that voice is Izel. Mack reminds Jaco that they are there to capture, not kill and for him to be wary of the crew.

As if on cue, a member of that crew shows up and Jaco immediately shoots him. Mack looks at Jaco in bewilderment and reminds him again not to kill anyone. However, the shot crew member gets up. Upon seeing that, Mack reconsiders and tells Jaco “good call” and to keep shooting. As more crew members show up, Jaco and Davis make to hold them off while Mack and Yo-Yo continue their search for FitzSimmons.

Speaking of FitzSimmons, they are hiding in the walls when they hear gunfire. The Agents of Shield have arrived. Unfortunately the Shrike somehow hear them and pull them out of their hiding place.  Before the Shrike can do anything, the “abnormally large pain in the ass” returns and handcuffs them to a pipe. Yo-Yo along with Mack appears. He sees Fitz, yells Turbo, and picks him up, hugging him tightly while Fitz’s back groans in protest.

Cornering Izel

Davis and Jaco track Izel to the bridge. Jaco sees an opportunity to end this but Davis reminds him of their orders. However, Jaco knows he may never get another opportunity like this so Davis lets him go. He tells Jaco he will come around to the back while Jaco climbs the stairs to the front. When they converge, she is gone.  Meanwhile, a Shrike comes out from another door. Jaco quickly disposes of him and they wonder where Izel went.

As this is happening, Yo-Yo and Mack lead FitzSimmons back toward their entrance point. Jemma and Fitz confirm to Mack that the entire crew is infected as they run into Davis and Jaco.  Jaco tells Mack that they saw Izel and he wants to go back. However, realizing they are outnumbered and outgunned, he says they need to leave. Jaco starts to protest but Yo-Yo reminds him they must live to fight another day. When they arrive at the exit point, the Shrike have already arrived.

They quickly ascertain there are way too many Shrike for them to try and fight.  Their options are limited because there’s no other way out. Jaco tells them he knows of a way if Fitz can lead them to the airlock. Once they are safely inside the airlock, Jaco hangs up his jacket, and activates their portal, that leads into Sarge’s truck.

The Gangs All Here

Now removed from the Shrike danger, Daisy and May once again hear something on the roof.  They initially think its more of the Shrike and prepare to fight.  Instead, Fitz opens the door, much to the surprise of Daisy and May. None of them are as excited as Deke who rushes toward him. He hugs Fitz calling him Bobo and telling him how happy he is to see him. For Fitz’s part, he is completely confused as he has no idea who Deke is.

When things settle down, May asks how they got there and Mack gives the credit to Jaco.  However, as they turn toward Jaco, he’s preparing to leave and has collected the bomb. He tells them to tell Sarge that he has completed the mission. Yo-Yo tries to talk him out of it by telling him that he doesn’t have to do this for Sarge. However, he reassures her that he’s doing it for himself.  Snowflake also asks him not to go. He looks at her and tells her not to worry…soon he’ll be a butterfly. Jaco reopens the portal and walks through with the bomb, closing it after he goes through. Upon arriving on the freighter, the Shrikes approach him as he blows fire at them and the ship blows up.

A Moment to Reflect and Celebrate

Mack and crew return to the lighthouse to celebrate their victory.  As Mack and Daisy talk, he tells her he still wants to hear about her space adventures. She says she saw an ocean of lava and she never thought it would get weirder than that. But here they are.

Yo-Yo converses with May asking her how she is holding up with the whole Sarge/Coulson connection. May tells her that she should have killed Sarge when she first saw him. She admits to herself that she hesitated because of the possibility that he might be Coulson.  Yo-Yo reminds her that they all saw something in him that wasn’t there. Changing the subject, May asked Yo-Yo how she was able to talk Jaco into helping them. She explained that she just reminded him of who and what he was fighting for.

Deke and his Bobo

Elsewhere, Deke is talking a blue streak to Fitz. He tells Fitz about his company and talks about taking Fitz and Jemma to Scotland to learn more about his family. Jemma for her part, smiles sympathetically and when Fitz asks her why Deke keeps calling him Bobo, she tells him that he told him to.

Agent Piper, who has been missing in action recently, asks Davis about the mission. He barely answers as he is suddenly extremely tired and falls asleep.  Snowflake is standing by the door, waiting for the guards to move Sarge to a holding cell. As he is escorted by, he tells her it wasn’t personal. She lunges at him, but Deke stops her, telling her she has a new family now. Unfortunately, Daisy didn’t get that memo and wants to know why Snowflake hasn’t been locked up. Especially since she is a serial killer. She has Snowflake incarcerated to the dismay of Deke. On the plus side, Deke brings a large screen TV to her holding cell.

Mack toasts the Agents of Shield. Both those who had been there since the beginning and to those who are new. He salutes the ones they’ve lost and the ones who have returned. Finally, he recognizes those who that stand by you at your best and your worst. He finishes by acknowledging that there would be no Shield without them all.

Mack reconciles with Yo-Yo

Mack goes to Yo-Yo to admit that he has handled their relationship poorly.  He was concerned that if he worried too much about her, it would compromise his role as director. But he has come to the realization that she can take care of herself.  However, Mack isn’t asking for her forgiveness, but he would ask for a chance to earn it. As he starts to leave, Yo-Yo closes the door before he turns around.  She smiles at him and says they can take it slow and kisses Mack.

The Lead in to Next Week

Earlier, they show a scene with May looking at Coulson’s Shield Badge. The episode ends with May barging into Sarge’s cell.  When he sees who it is, he doesn’t want to deal with her. However, knowing that she wasn’t there to talk, he tells her to get on with whatever she’s going to do.  In a matter of be careful what you ask for, May pulls out a gun and shoots Sarge in the chest multiple times, and appears in the end, to put a bullet in his head.

Did May kill Sarge? Was she responsible or did the missing Izel have something to do with it? What’s up with the sleeping Davis and is it also connected to Izel? We have three episodes left this season to see. Did you watch Collision Course Part 2? Share your thoughts with us at GeekVibesNation.
