Resident Alien is a guilty pleasure. Not only because it stars Alan Tudyk, but because the SYFY channel has a surprising talent. They make shows with a smaller budget than most, but make it more enjoyable than most bigger budgeted series today. From Wynonna Earp to SurrealEstate, the SYFY channel continues to create enjoyable TV with this latest season of Resident Alien. Take it from me, I had just started the show this past weekend and caught up to the season three finale.
Season two ended with D’arcy unsurprised by Harry’s alien reveal and with more people knowing of Harry’s true identity, the show went further to give almost every main player their own alien encounter. It reminds me a little of iZombie, where more people found out the truth as the seasons went on. While keeping Harry’s secret a secret was part of the fun, it is a relief to have everyone getting closer to being in on the truth. There’s big fish to fry and it’s better to have everyone working together.
The subplots throughout the season worked towards a common goal, though; not all of them met by the end. SYFY channel, where’s the season four confirmation? Because that finale was NUTS
While the third season was overall enjoyable, there were a few things that fell short; so let’s get them out of the way now. First of all, it felt a little unnecessary to have D’arcy insert herself so much. Of course, she is Asta’s best friend, but there felt like there were times when D’arcy was doing everything everyone accuses her of and that’s making things about herself. Even stealing the bomb to go aboard the Grey’s ship felt a little forced.
In addition, one of our favorite parts about the show are interactions between Harry and Asta. However, their moments together severely diminished this season, so we need more of that in season four. Perhaps it’s just this reviewer’s point of view, but it felt like something more than friends might have happened between Harry and Asta in the last two seasons, and that dynamic kind of went away in season three. They tried introducing a small additional romance between Asta and Joseph, who is a great addition to the cast, but, ultimately, we want more Asta and Harry.
Harry’s new romance with the Blue Avian, Heather, was fine but annoying at times. On the other hand, Sheriff Mike’s relationship with Officer Lena was a welcomed addition. The Sheriff is often a comedic part of the show, but his relationship with Lena adds layers and complexities to his character. In addition, the way his and Deputy Liv’s friendship has bloomed has been natural and nice to see. Especially when he accompanied her in confronting her grandmother. Liv is such a wonderful character and it’s nice seeing her not be the butt of Mike’s ego anymore.
There were many comedic parts in season three, but ultimately, things got dark. Ben and Kate’s storyline with their baby and the Greys took a dark turn and while these two haven’t always been on the page before, this common goal got them in tune with each other. While it seemed that they weren’t compatible, this storyline really got them together.
One of the consistent and best themes of the show is the concept of found family. We explored more about Jay and Asta, and while Asta’s mother is a terrible example of a mom, she is surrounded by those who love her, such as her father, sister, and extended family. The theme always seems to be that blood does not determine family and it’s a nice message to spread.
Alan Tudyk continues to be an absolute gem and it’s good to see Harry exploring more of his human side. We see not only Harry is capable of falling in love, but that he has a sense of duty when it comes to his son, even if he essentially had to be pushed into that position. One of the best scenes in the season was between Harry and Kate when he recognized the importance of Kate remembering her daughter. Harry is mostly a laughable character, but when he gets serious, it’s a great moment.
The season ended on a HUGE cliffhanger and my God, we need season four. Immediately.
Season three of Resident Alien is currently available to stream in full of Peacock.
