Rian Johnson Says That Trying to Please Fans is a Mistake

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”33437″ img_size=”696×442″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]In the wake of J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker garnering poor reviews from critics, another star Wars director who dealt with his fair share of criticism speaks out. Rian Johnson, the man behind The Last Jedi; directed the Star Wars movie that seems to still be debated to this day. With fans having cheered at the idea of J.J. Abrams returning to the Star Wars franchise, I don’t think fans thought that the movie would come out how it did. Johnson says that pandering to fans is a “mistake”.

“I want to be challenged as a fan when I sit down in the theater.”

John did not go to the premiere of the Rise of Skywalker, but did attend a podcast where he was asked about pleasing fans:

“I think approaching any creative process with [the purpose of making fandoms happy] would be a mistake that would lead to probably the exact opposite result. Even my experience as a fan, you know if I’m coming into something, even if it’s something that I think I want, if I see exactly what I think I want on the screen, it’s like ‘oh, okay,’ it might make me smile and make me feel neutral about the thing and I won’t really think about it afterwards, but that’s not really going to satisfy me.”

He continued:

“What I’m aiming for every time I sit down in a theater is to have the experience [I had] with Empire Strikes Back, something that’s emotionally resonant and feels like it connects up and makes sense and really gets to the heart of what this thing is and in a way that I never could have seen coming.”

He concluded,

“I want to be shocked, I want to be surprised, I want to be thrown off-guard, I want to have things recontextualized, I want to be challenged as a fan when I sit down in the theater.”

To say that The Last Jedi has divided fans is an understatement. What did you think of The Last Jedi and have you seen Rise of Skywalker yet?
