Roku Nearing Deal to Save ‘ZOEY’S EXTRAORDINARY PLAYLIST’ with a Two-Hour Wrap-Up Movie

Earlier this summer, NBC canceled Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist after two seasons and an unresolved cliffhanger. And, for a while, the fan-favorite show’s future looked questionable. Showrunner Austin Winsberg was rallying the fans and filling them with hope. And the show’s production company, Lionsgate, was hard at work shopping the series around to potential networks and streamers. But with the cast’s contracts having expired in July, things weren’t looking so good for the musical comedy. Until now, that is.

Deadline is reporting that Roku is nearing a deal to save the Emmy Award-nominated series. According to Deadline’s sources, the deal would initially be for a two-hour film, set to air during the holiday season on the Roku Channel. However, their sources suggest that if the film is successful, there’s the possibility of Roku ordering another season of the series. The deal isn’t quite finalized yet. But things are looking good.

Deadline’s sources also mention that Lionsgate has begun reaching out to the show’s primary cast. Negotiations remain ongoing, but most of the key performers are expected to return for the film.

Created by Austin Winsberg, the critically acclaimed series ran for two years on NBC. It scored numerous nominations and awards – including a win at last year’s Emmys for its choreography last year and several nominations this year.

Are you excited to see Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist return as a TV movie?
