Rumor: ‘BATWOMAN’ To Create New Character as Lead

Fans were shocked by Ruby Rose’s departure from The CW’s Batwoman. Reasons as to why the actress stepped away are unclear, but it did leave the show without a lead. While it was surmised that the show would simply recast the role of Kate Kane, the show is going in a completely different direction.

In a bizarre turn of events, it seems that the show is going to create a new character to play Batwoman, as opposed to having Kate Kane as the lead. In the comics, Kate Kane is Batwoman. And Batwoman made a huge leap for representation in the superhero television realm as Kate Kane is an openly gay character. Now, we’re going to have a brand new character, who is supposed called Ryan Wilder. This could just be a placeholder name. This news comes from a now-deleted casting notice which was posted to the Batwoman Reddit forum.

Decider was the first to report this news. The outlet describes Ryan Wilder as a woman in her mid-20s who “is about to become Batwoman”.

Decider reported:

“She’s likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.”

The question remains, why make a new character? It’s only been one season – surely fans would adjust to someone other than Rose playing Kate Kane.
