RUMOR: ‘Black Widow’ Stand Alone Film To Focus on Y2K?

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”6702″ img_size=”800×400″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]When the possibilities of a Black Widow stand alone film were discussed, fan’s were enthusiastic as one might expect. Since her appearance in Iron Man 2, the character, as played by Scarlett Johansson, has been one of the more popular Avengers with both men and women. Now it appears a possible synopsis for Marvel Studios’ Scarlett Johansson-led Black Widow movie has surfaced online. This is by way of a subscription-based film production tracking site Production Weekly.

Following the reports from earlier this year, Widow will be set before 2012’s The Avengers, and in fact two years before the 2008 set Iron Man which would put the time frame around 2006 with a young Natasha Romanoff.

This is the synopsis as reported on Production Weekly:

At birth the Black Widow (aka Natasha Romanova) is given to the KGB, which grooms her to become its ultimate operative. When the U.S.S.R. breaks up, the government tries to kill her as the action moves to present-day New York, where she is a freelance operative. The standalone film will find Romanoff living in the United States 15 years after the fall of the Soviet Union.

This scenario would fit the character’s past in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and could well open the door to feature the likes of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson, in the same way they appear in the ’90s-era- Captain Marvel. It would also allow for Jeremy Renner to bring his Hawkeye back to perhaps “make another call” as far as going after Natasha and how she got recruited into S.H.I.E.L.D.

In further breaking news to file in the same “not written in stone as of yet folder,” according to our friends at MCUCosmic.Com, there is a rumor that the Y2K bug on December 31, 1999 will play some part in the plot of Black Widow. As someone who was all stressed out by the theories and doomsday prophesies of the coming of the Y2K bug, I remember being both relieved and annoyed that all that time spent talking about it was shown to be a waste of time. Let’s suppose the reason that it never happened was the Black Widow was there to circumvent it. Makes for a good plot device and could tie into other storylines being discussed. But once again, these are just suppositions at this point and could be proven to be true or variations of true. Stay tuned…

So what do we know at this point. Cate Shortland was selected as director in July, and the film’s most recent script draft was written by Jac Schaeffer. It will eventually happen and I look forward to seeing how Marvel handles it. If going by past history, it should be awesome.

Did you wonder if the stand alone Black Widow movie was ever going to see the light of day? While it hasn’t been given a start for production, it does sound like progress is being made.
