Last night’s episode was a wild ride. When the cast of GOT said that episode five would be more intense than episode three, they weren’t kidding. It was the final showdown between our favorite characters and Cersei Lannister and in true Game of Thrones fashion, the rug was pulled out from under us. Rather than ending with the Lannister army surrendering and the bells ringing, as would have been ideal for all parties involved; Daenerys Stormborn decided that wasn’t enough. I would hate to make this comparison to her father, but the Dragon Queen seemed to simply want everything to burn at that moment.
The rest of the episode saw the destruction of not only of King’s Landing, but the death of many, soldiers and innocent civilians alike. This decision making has really created an uproar on the internet, but the showrunners for Game of Thrones explained the reasoning behind this and it’s been a long time coming.
David Benioff spoke:
“There is something chilling about the way Dany has responded to the death of her enemies. Even when you look back to season one when Khal Drogo gives the golden crown to Viserys and her reaction of watching her brother’s head melted off. He was a terrible brother, so I don’t think anyone was crying when Viserys died, but…”
DB Weiss also commented:
“I don’t think she decided ahead of time that she was going to do what she did. Then she sees the Red Keep, which is to her the home that her family built when they first came over to this country 300 years ago. It’s in this moment on the walls of King’s Landing where she’s looking at that symbol of everything that was taken from her, when she makes the decision to make this personal.”
Benioff adds,
“If circumstances had been different, I don’t think this side of Dany ever would have come out. If Cersei hadn’t betrayed her, if Cersei hadn’t executed Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel), if Jon hadn’t told her the truth… if any of these things happened in a different way, then I don’t think we’d be seeing this side of Daenerys Targaryen.”
Ultimately, we did see the death of the tyrant Cersei, but at what costs? What were your thoughts on this episode and your hopes for the series finale?
