‘Star Trek Discovery’ Finds It’s Spock With Ethan Peck

Through the original series and the Star Trek motion pictures, there was Leonard Nimoy. Time moves on as it always does and eventually the Star Trek franchise was rebooted by J.J. Abrams and he introduced a new Spock played by Zachary Quinta…and still Leonard Nimoy was there. Now with much anticipation, CBS All Access has cast its Spock.

Ethan Peck (Grandson of the late great Gregory Peck) has been cast to take on the iconic role and will play the half-human, half-Vulcan science officer of the USS Enterprise in season two of the subscription video on demand service’s Star Trek: Discovery.

“Through 52 years of television and film, a parallel universe and a mirror universe, Mr. Spock remains the only member of the original bridge crew to span every era of Star Trek. The great Leonard Nimoy, then the brilliant Zachary Quinto, brought incomparable humanity to a character forever torn between logic and emotion,” showrunner Alex Kurtzman said. “We searched for months for an actor who would, like them, bring his own interpretation to the role. An actor who would, like them, effortlessly embody Spock’s greatest qualities, beyond obvious logic: empathy, intuition, compassion, confusion and yearning. Ethan Peck walked into the room inhabiting all of these qualities, aware of his daunting responsibility to Leonard, Zack and the fans, and ready to confront the challenge in the service of protecting and expanding on Spock’s legacy. In that spirit, we’re thrilled to welcome him to the family.”

While Star Trek: Discovery takes place before the original Star Trek series, there were clues that Spock would be formally introduced. This came in the season one finale in which the Discovery encountered the USS Enterprise — the ship that would eventually be captained by James T. Kirk and  the crew which included first officer Spock among its ranks.

In Discovery, Spock serves as chief science officer under Captain Christopher Pike (new series regular Anson Mount). This is consistent to how the original series depicted the relationship in the original pilot episode, The Cage as well as the later wrap around episode, The Menagerie. The season two trailer (see it below) offers a better update on what Spock is up to in Discovery as the clip reveals the Vulcan is off on his own journey. “He took leave,” Pike says in a voiceover. “It’s as if he’d run into a question he couldn’t answer.”

The introduction of Spock makes sense because of his larger connection to the USS Discovery: notably his father, Sarek (James Frain) and foster sister, Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green). With Michael’s theory that her relative is somehow connected to a series of cosmic anomalies, it appears like we once again might be in a search for Spock.

With the re-introduction of the classic character, viewership could increase if nothing else to see how the creative team handles the iconic Spock. Does Spock’s return peak your interest or were you hoping to stay clear of past ties? Beam us your answer at GVNation
