Star Trek Discovery: Solving the Picard Maneuver

The “Picard Maneuver,” it was a thing of legend back in the days when Star Trek: The Next Generation aired. Fans of the show know exactly what I am referring to. It was the move that Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard had to do with his uniform every time the Captain had to stand. His command tunic would ride up and require him to give it a quick tug downward to keep him looking regally Captain like.

When the planning for Star Trek: Discovery on CBS All Access, was underway they put a lot of thought into the practical consideration of the notorious “Picard Maneuver.”

While speaking during a panel at Star Trek Las Vegas, Star Trek: Discovery star Jason Isaacs, who played Gabriel Lorca in the show’s first season, revealed that CBS was quite concerned with similar issues in regards to the new Discovery era Starfleet uniforms.

“It was very, very important from CBS that the clothes should never have a crease in them.”

They tried a number of different techniques but eventually, the only solution that the Star Trek: Discovery team could come up with was to give him two jackets: one for sitting, and one for standing. Isaacs had to switch out one for the other between takes depending on how he was positioned. This was how they overcame the possible wardrobe malfunction and avoided a “Lorca Maneuver.”

Would a rumpled or less than perfect starfleet uniform been a deal breaker for our Star Trek fans? If the occasional tug was good enough for Ser Patrick Stewart, it certainly wouldn’t bother me. Let us know at GVNation.
