A post-apocalyptic saga spanning multiple timelines, this limited drama series tells the stories of survivors of a devastating flu as they attempt to rebuild and reimagine the world anew while holding on to the best of what’s been lost. Based on the international bestseller of the same name by Emily St. John Mandel, STATION ELEVEN stars Mackenzie Davis, Himesh Patel, Lori Petty, David Wilmot, and Daniel Zovatto, with appearances from Gael Garcia Bernal, Danielle Deadwyler, David Cross and more.

For in-depth thoughts on Station Eleven, please see my colleague Emmy Wenstrup’s review from its original television debut here.

    Video Quality

The 4K UHD Blu-Ray of Station Eleven is presented in 2.00:1 with a 2160p HDR/Dolby Vision transfer that offers a tremendous uptick in quality over the streaming version of the series. This particular package does not contain any accompanying Blu-Ray discs, so there is no way to compare the two formats. While the series may take on some dour subject matter, the color spectrum keeps things surprisingly robust and vibrant for a knockout visual experience from the first episode to the last. The Dolby Vision really finds the nuances of each hue, and the black levels are especially strong, staying deep and inky with great detail.

There are some entrancing shots of nature that make you want to pause and marvel at the scenery. The highlights are balanced with no instances of blooming to be found. The physical 4K version allows for way more depth, clarity and stability to the image. There are numerous instances of scenes in darkness that allow for a more impressive sense of what action is being depicted on screen. The disc plays well with gaining the most texture from the production design, makeup and costumes. This is a very natural looking transfer that gives the series a three dimensional feel that’s a marked improvement from the streaming version. Fans should consider this the ideal way to experience the series.

    Audio Quality

This Blu-Ray comes with a lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track that gets the most out of this dynamic series. The series leans more on the talky side, but there are several kinetic moments that bring life to the track. Dialogue comes through clearly in the front channel without being overwhelmed by any sound effects or score. The track has a good sense of directionality with sounds always emanating from the appropriate channels. The more thrilling moments put the low end to work. The Dan Romer score provides the perfect atmosphere for this experience which fills the speakers well. This audio presentation is pretty fantastic even without an upgraded Atmos audio mix to push things even further.

    Special Features

There are no special features provided on this disc.

    Final Thoughts

Station Eleven is not the most easily digestible series, but it is one that rewards tenfold on whatever energy you put into it. The narrative is wonderfully dense and thought-provoking in the best way, and it is not afraid to challenge you with a lack of easy answers. The series builds with each episode until it crescendos into a completely invigorating conclusion. It is one of the best limited series we have seen in some time. Paramount Home Entertainment has done this series a great service by revisiting it for a 4K UHD Blu-Ray release that features a pretty amazing A/V presentation but nothing in the way of special features. This is not a series you should let slip off your radar so lightly. Highly Recommended

Station Eleven can be purchased on 4K UHD Blu-Ray directly through MovieZyng or various other online retailers
