Synopsis: The story of Christopher Reeve is an astonishing rise from unknown actor to iconic movie star, and his definitive portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman set the benchmark for the superhero cinematic universes that dominate cinema today. Reeve portrayed the Man of Steel in four Superman films and played dozens of other roles that displayed his talent and range as an actor, before being injured in a near-fatal horse-riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed from the neck down. After becoming a quadriplegic, he became a charismatic leader and activist in the quest to find a cure for spinal cord injuries, as well as a passionate advocate for disability rights and care – all while continuing his career in cinema in front of and behind the camera and dedicating himself to his beloved family.
It’s easy to believe that there is only one way to live or a singular way to view things when you decide you’re the only person who matters. Refusing to see life from anyone else’s perspective other than your own is saddening, but also a luxury that isn’t awarded to everyone. Being born into a favorable environment doesn’t make you special but understanding the plights of others while doing what you can to help does. Kindness and empathy are a gift as much as they are a skill. And like any skill, the more you practice it, the easier it becomes and the better you are at it.
“Everybody’s looking for a hero, not just five years olds.”
Who do we trust to be our hero in a world of lies, corruption, and fabrication? Before you answer, what is a hero? Is it powers, muscles, and a tightly fitted costume? Maybe it’s a badge and a sworn oath or perhaps it’s an ordinary person overcoming overwhelming obstacles. The answer will vary depending on who you ask, but as the film ponders the same question, it becomes clear that one was among us on screen and in reality. Directed by Ian Bonhôte & Peter Ettedgui, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is how one man went from superhuman to super human. This documentary emotionally highlights how Reeve went from charismatic entertainer to hope-infused activist and life changer. His fateful fall may have proved him mortal, but his rise as an activist and voice for disabled people made him eternal.
Despite the image of the Kryptonian Man of Steel you see above, this narrative is an extremely human one. Featuring Reeve’s children, Alexandra Reeve Givens, Matthew Reeve, and Will Reeve along with friends such as Susan Sarandon, Jeff Daniels, Whoopi Goldberg, and Glenn Close, this film covers the good, the bad, and the hard to talk about. From his difficult childhood and rise to stardom, to his accident and legislative impact, the film features archival footage as well as never-before-seen home videos. We learn what kind of man Reeve was in private, what motivated him to keep going when it was easy to give up, and how his perseverance inspired and healed countless people.
“His impact was tangible.”
Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is as eye-opening as it is an emotional journey. Championing his accolades and good deeds but never overlooking the flaws, this documentary is not only a loving declaration but a reminder that life nor anyone in it is perfect. The story is about tenacity, determination, humility, hope, and selflessness. You’ll laugh, cry, and more than anything, you’ll be inspired. If you’re a fan of the DC or Marvel, come learn about the man whose star power influenced the cinematic universes we now enjoy. Whether you think you’re an expert on Mr. Reeve or know very little, you will not be disappointed. Its rewatchability is high.

Pace & Pop
From beginning to end, the pace of this film is perfect. From the charming high moments to the heartwrenching difficult ones, there is no waste or filler. It moves as smoothly as Superman flies. What popped for me was just how much Reeve meant to people. During an era that may have been bleaker than we’d care to admit, Christopher Reeve embodied good and hope. To many, he really was a superhero.

Impact & Influence
After you’ve experienced this documentary, you can’t help but be blown away. It’s incredible what a person can accomplish despite life-altering obstacles. The film triggers personal inventory and introspection. Moreover, this powerful story makes you want to be a better person. It helps you realize that you can strive more, but maybe you don’t have it so bad. Christopher Reeve was an inspiration during his incredibly accomplished life and his legacy continues to inspire all ages.
