One of the biggest reasons why ending The Boys after five seasons personally felt like the best idea was because, how long can they go with trying to defeat Homelander and failing before the formula becomes repetitive? Realistically, while we love the seasons; story-wise, he probably should have died after season three. Season four was okay, but season five has [so far] made up for it. Partially because we know we’re in the endgame now and we’re working towards a conclusion, whatever it may look like.

Spoilers Ahead
That being said, how in the HELL are they going to defeat Homelander now? Homelander has always had a conflated ego and season four’s storyline did him no favors. Season five introduced the wild idea that Homelander now thinks he’s God and has introduced V1, which can make him immortal. Most of the season has been all parties desperately trying to find this serum, preferably before Homelander gets his hands on it. And, I don’t know why; but we thought that they wouldn’t actually have the man get his hands on it.
However, with only two episodes left in the entire series, Homelander has gotten his hands on V1. Worse yet? It was Soldier Boy who gave it to him. Cue the Tyra Banks gif of “we were all rooting for you”, because why did we think Soldier Boy would actually have a redemption arc this season? It’s so confusing tonally to have Soldier Boy hate Homelander, yet now give his son a serum to make him live forever. Didn’t this man just go through an emotional journey just a few episodes ago? Is it our love for Jensen Ackles that was blinding us with hope that this character would actually turn out to be one of the good guys? Honestly? A little disappointing.

How Are They Supposed to Defeat Homelander?
Homelander was already impossibly strong, how is the team going to defeat him? It’s very obvious that we’re going to see a lot of death coming soon – the episode touches upon things being worthwhile only because there’s an ending and it seems that Kimiko and Starlight are okay with dying, if it means an end to all of the madness. But, okay, Homelander still has V1 in his veins now, so what are we going to do?
The only upside to Homelander getting the V1 is that it’s something Sister Sage did not account for. Her character has become comically narcissistic lately and has been reduced to more of a mustache-twirling villain than a high-IQ chess player. Sage didn’t account for love being the driving factor as to why Soldier Boy would give Homelander the V1. They’re really pushing Soldier Boy loving Stormfront here – I thought he had loved Crimson Countess?
The Deep killing the new Black Noir was completely shocking. We really thought the show was gearing up to do something really cool with the new Black Noir, but to have him taken out by the Deep? Really unexpected. Not necessarily disappointing, it’s not like this Black Noir is the one from seasons one through three, but still – it had previously looked like he was maybe getting sick enough of everything at Vought that maybe they could have made him an ally? This season is really subverting expectations.
Where is Gen V?

With only TWO episodes left of The Boys, it’ll be really interesting to see what happens. Also, now that we think about it, where are the Gen V characters? Really, it feels like there was no point in introducing these characters. Oh and we met Bombsight – looking forward to Vought Rising even if Soldier Boy has kind of been a disappointment these last couple of episodes.
