The Boys Season Two Episode Seven Review: An Explosive That Packs a Punch

We are really getting down to the wire here. Episode seven is the last episode before season two’s finale and it could not have left off in a more explosive fashion. I’m writing this review just after the credits rolled. My heart is still pounding. You know, there were a few episodes in the beginning of season two that had me wondering if maybe this Amazon Prime show didn’t have the stamina to keep up the momentum from season one. I’m completely wrong. These past two episodes have shown me that. Episode seven was fantastic and it sets up for episode eight – even though, I have no idea where it’s leading to.

Slight Spoilers

When you have so many great characters in a show, it’s hard to focus on them all the time. Still, The Boys did a great job in giving each their spotlight. Whereas episode six focused heavily on Frenchie’s past, episode seven spotlighted Billy Butcher. Only it wasn’t with Becca – rather his mom and dad. In an episode that seemed to be “going, going, gone”, Billy’s moments with his parents were a necessary slowdown. Karl Urban has the innate ability to tell a story where he takes his time to chew the scene. It’s a joy to watch.

There was so much going on in this episode, it’s hard to pinpoint. I have been a big fan of Queen Maeve and I believe we are getting closer and closer to her truly teaming up with Starlight. We already know she is planning to take down Homelander. The problem is that she doesn’t have the support Starlight does, so she has to be careful. I imagine, though; her battle with Black Noir may play out in the last episode. I’m not sure, but it was a great scene – Starlight battling against Black Noir. It was pretty brutal, but I was happy to see Maeve step in.

Warning: Spoilers!

I also have to point out Shawn Ashmore as Lamplighter, who quickly became my favorite in the short amount of time that he was in The Boys. To say I was a little disappointed by his end is an understatement, but listen – this is The Boys. They’re known for their shocking twists. As evident by the way they ended episode seven. It was literally…explosive.

The last thing I’ll mention is that what we’re seeing with Homelander and Stormfront is mirroring what we’ve seen in real life. The things they’re saying to try to rally their troops is very similar to what we saw during the 2016 presidential election. When I spoke to Laz Alonso, who plays Mother’s Milk; he had said that it’s impressive how much The Boys mirrors real life. I couldn’t agree more. Homelander and Stormfront are really gearing up for something and my heart breaks for Rebecca, as she’s put in the middle of this sadistic pair.

Rating: 4.5/5

This is really where my impatience is playing out because I need the next episode to happen. I know once it does I will be sad that I’ll have to wait a year (or more) for season three. But, after the way episode seven ended, I feel an urgency to know what the hell happens next. What does the end of episode seven mean for The Boys’ mission? What is happening with the Church of the Collective? And who isn’t making it out of this alive?
