‘The Informer’ Movie Review: Prison Drama Full of Betrayal

No exaggeration, I have been waiting for The Informer to be released in the United States for forever. The Informer was originally released in 2019 in the UK. It’s only now hitting the U.S. on November 6th. The Informer is a crime thriller based on the Swedish novel Three Seconds, written by Roslund & Hellstrom. Starring Joel Kinnaman, Ana de Armas, Rosamund Pike, Common, and Clive Owen. I was thankfully able to view this movie before the U.S. release date and I was so happy to finally watch a movie I’ve waited so long for. Seriously, I was so jealous back in 2019 it was released in the U.K. only.

Let’s Get Into the Plot

Kinnaman plays Pete Koslow – an informant for the FBI who finds himself in a really unstable situation with the Polish mob. After an undercover operation goes wrong, Pete is given the opportunity to go to jail to be an informant from the inside. Things go from bad to worse when the FBI decides to wash their hands of Pete and out him as an informant. Which, in jail, is essentially a death sentence.

Where Does The Informer Fit Into Other Prison Dramas?

There were some aspects of this prison drama that were predictable and there were some plotholes. All in all, as far as prison dramas goes, I think something like Shot Caller is better. But, I did love Kinnaman as this imposing reformed criminal who is stuck between two sides that are equally trying to screw him over. What I did also love about this movie was the relationship between Kinnaman’s Pete and de Armas’ Sofia. They had a really great relationship and if you wanted to look up “ride or die” in the dictionary, Sofia would be there. Seriously, there is no other woman more understanding in a movie than Sofia. She knew what needed to be done and there was no BS between the two of them.

Rating: 3.7/5

At first, I felt that Common’s role in the movie was unnecessary, but the story had the ability to make him very vital to the storyline. Kinnaman was certainly the standout of the movie, giving off real Polish mobster vibes and some heart-racing action scenes. Though, I do wish there were some more scenes like that and that the jail part happened a little earlier in the movie, I still enjoyed it. You should know the kind of world you’re walking into when you’re getting into a movie like The Informer. It’s not Shakespeare, but it’s entertaining and pretty badass. And who doesn’t love seeing Kinnaman, Pike, de Armas, and Common in a movie together?
