Fortunately, until things are solidified with GOTG, the merger of Disney and Fox could present the MCU a perfect vehicle to open the Cosmos to movie goers. That vehicle would be the Silver Surfer, who was last seen on the big screen in Fox’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
While the film itself was underwhelming, the performance of Doug Jones (with voice work by Laurence Fishburne) was the least of the film’s problems. Jones for his part has already expressed an interest in revisiting the character. Especially since he had signed a two picture deal when he appeared the first time and that contract has not yet been fulfilled.
I was onboard then, and I would be onboard now if the Surfer ever came back. He’s a beloved character and I would love to play him again.
Beloved indeed. Silver Surfer was the creation of Jack “King” Kirby and made his debut in Fantastic Four #48 back in 1966. His origin is wrought with the kind of tragic details that would make for a good origin type film, while making an avenue to explore the far reaches of the galaxy. He was born Norrin Radd from the planet Zenn-La. His planet had the misfortune of a visit from the planet-eating entity known as Galactus. In order to save his world, he agrees to serve Galactus as his herald, seeking out other planets for the entity to feed on. Part of that deal meant leaving the love of his life Shalla-Bal, and being enbued with the power cosmic and becoming the Silver Surfer. His journey’s lead him to many planets and he tried to only offer Galactus planets devoid of sentient life, but was in some cases overruled by the planet eaters all consuming hunger. It was these moments that lead him to cross paths with many of Marvel’s mightiest heroes for both good and bad. With that kind of history, he is a natural choice for inclusion in the MCU.
