Quick Recap
Hopefully, after the first two episodes, you are as invested in this show as I am. The drama and mystery get more complex with each hour, and my interest grows. So, now we know that what Flynne and Burton thought was a video game is actually a quantum tunnel into the future into an android-like body. Everyone, good and bad is desperately searching for Aelita West. And in actuality, we technically don’t know who is actually evil, everyone in the 2099 timeline seems a bit suspicious. For now, we have to assume that Wilf along with Lev and his team, that hired him, are working to stop an evil Research Institute. However, it doesn’t seem that Wilf completely trusts Lev. Burton and his friends are rather formidable and are more than capable of protecting the Fisher family. And lastly, Mr. Corbell Pickett, the seemingly head of a drug manufacturing family was contacted by RI to take out Flynne and her family after the first attempt failed.
Episode 3: Haptic Drift
“Does a lion look weak as it crouches before it pounces?”
The true nature of some will be exposed. While we are still trying to figure out exactly what is going on, this episode gets into the thick of some drama while giving us some character backstories and the ruthlessness some possess. This is definitely the best episode so far. It begins in 2015 with a younger Corbell as we witness the cold, cruel, and unmerciful nature of the future illegal drug peddler. From there, we see Burton and Flynne butt heads as he attempts to take control of the whole situation. Later Burton has a financial run-in with Corbell Pickett that becomes an intense showdown. It also leads to details about the town and how incredibly close Burton and his buddies really are. There is more lingo to add to the show’s lexicon such as Haptic Recruitment, Haptic Drift, Polt finally gets defined, and the term Neoprim is introduced.
“I want you to find out for certain, and then I want a body count.”
Where the episode really digs its heels in is when it decides to focus on Wilf and Dr. Nuland. They are not only two characters that we know very little about but they are seemingly at opposite ends of the good and evil spectrum. We traverse the difficult path that is Wilf’s past and discover his unexpected connection to Aelita. On the other end, we enter the plotting and scheming mind of the head of the Research Institute, Dr. Cherise Nuland. It was mentioned in a previous episode how powerful she is, but now we witness how calculated and brutal she can truly be. It further lets us know the lengths she will go to capture and end Flynne and her family. I may not have mentioned it in the last review, but the SFX and aesthetics are amazing, the acting is great, and the chemistry is fantastic. The show is turning into something incredibly exciting.
Final Thoughts
There’s no way that Corbell Pickett doesn’t get involved more than having Jasper spy on Flynne and Burton. You can tell he loves being in control and he more than likely took Burton’s threat as a challenge. And at some point, I feel like he and Dr. Nuland are going to have some kind of conflict. With their personalities and resources, it would be mayhem. Oh, I almost forgot. What exactly was loaded into Flynne’s eye down in the basement of the Research Insitute in the first episode? Is that why they are after her? Did she download plans and information about what the RI is attempting to do? Also, if she does know, is she actively withholding what she knows? And lastly, I’m curious as to how long the Peripheral program has been going on and tested but also how much physical and mental damage Flynne brings back after each use.
