The Punisher’s Jon Bernthal Will Star in Showtime’s Reboot of American Gigolo

Does Jon Bernthal ever take breaks? Not really, but I’m okay with it. I’m especially okay with Bernthal headlining his own series, as he deserves much more than “five seconds” in each movie.

Bernthal is known for shows like The Walking Dead and The Punisher. Now he is set to headline Showtime’s American Gigolo update, which has been in the works since 2014. David Hollander, the former showrunner of recently canceled Ray Donovan will oversee the project. Showtime has been given a formal pilot for this reboot, which was originally a 1980 film starring Richard Gere. Bernthal will also receive credit as a producer.

American Gigolo will be a present-day reimagining of the movie and Bernthal will star as Julian Kaye. He will be introduced eighteen years after being arrested for a murder. He struggles to find his footing in the sex industry in modern-day Los Angeles. During this, he also looks to see who set him up to go to prison for all those years ago – and tries to reconnect with his one true love, Michelle.

Showtime’s entertainment president Gary Levine states:

“American Gigolo comes with all the sizzle you’d expect, but it also offers a deep dive into the complicated waters of relationships and sexuality in 2020. We’ve assembled an ‘A’ team to adapt this iconic movie into a Showtime series with the talent and magnetism of Jon Bernthal, the exquisite filmmaking and showrunning of David Hollander, the legendary Jerry Bruckheimer and our new sister studio, Paramount.”

Bernthal? The sex industry. It’s like they’ve read my fan-fiction. In all seriousness, what do you think of not only them rebooting American Gigolo, but bringing Bernthal in to star?
