Frasier Crane plane ticket to Boston from “Frasier” reboot for Paramount+
As fans eagerly await the return of one of television’s most beloved sitcoms, ‘Frasier’, many are wondering how the show will adapt to a new era.
The original series, which aired from 1993 to 2004, followed the misadventures of Dr. Frasier Crane, a psychiatrist turned radio host, as he navigated the ups and downs of life in Seattle.
Now, almost two decades later, ‘Frasier’ is set to return with a fresh perspective on the modern world. To give us an idea of what the new series will look like, we look back at five classic episodes from the original series and imagine how they might look in 2023.
Season 6 Episode 8: The Seal Who Came to Dinner
Niles decides to host an unsolicited gourmet party in Maris’s beach house while she’s away but didn’t count on a foul-smelling dead seal to appear washed up next to the house deck.
Despite Niles dousing the dead mammal in Maris’s perfume and dressing it in a peignoir, the smell lingers. But disaster strikes: Maris goes missing and people fear she’s been abducted.
The guests venture outside and mistake the seal for the murdered Maris. The humorous storyline ends with the Niles and his brother being dragged out in handcuffs, a supremely unfortunate misunderstanding.
2023 version
Any misunderstanding is avoided with Niles’ camera phone. He’s able to take pictures of the unfortunate seal and then show people that it wasn’t Maris when they became alarmed, thus avoiding arrest. There’s still not much he can do about the smell, though.
Season 4 Episode 18: Ham Radio
The KACL radio station celebrates its 50th anniversary by performing a live radio drama called ‘Nightmare Inn’ directed by Frasier. The play features him as the inspector investigating a hotel murder, with Roz, Gil Chesterton, and Bulldog as suspects.
However, the live broadcast quickly becomes a disaster as Roz struggles to speak due to a numbed mouth, Bulldog experiences stage fright, and Niles is forced to take on multiple roles.
To make matters worse, there are more balloon pops than gunshots in the script, and the sound of an ice cream truck adds to the chaos, resulting in a hilarious and unforgettable performance.
2023 version
The radio show has become a podcast, which produces similar results except the group can use modern technology to smooth over the bloopers. Still, this has unintended consequences in itself as they struggle to master the gadgets and end up releasing the show with mistakes included anyway.
Season 10 Episode 1: The Wedding
This episode opener sees Daphne and Niles get married in a Reno casino as they try to keep their marriage secret. Yet, when they return to Seattle, people find out, which leads to them organizing a second ceremony with Daphne’s mother causing much drama – and hilarity – along the way.
The couple mess up the second ceremony and organize one more that they hope to get right. Third time lucky.
But it’s during this third and final ceremony that Daphne realizes she can’t go through with the whole thing and calls it off.
2023 version
Real-life casinos aren’t as common in 2023, with people more likely to choose no deposit bonus online casinos than spend money to travel to the nearest city with a gambling venue. Daphne and Niles also realize that they can just get married online in a virtual ceremony which they can hide more easily from curious relatives.
However, with them now married, it’s too late for Daphne to have second thoughts and call the whole thing off. This leads to a farcical divorce just hours after they get hitched, something which they also do online.
Season 6 Episode 17: The Dinner Party
The TV show Frasier is known for its farce and ability to evoke pathos. However, even a simple 30-minute bickering session between the Crane brothers can be entertaining due to the high calibre of the show’s writing and acting.
In this episode, Frasier and Niles struggle to plan a dinner party, leading to conflicts over the guest list, caterer availability, and Martin’s poker night. When they overhear a conversation about their relationship thanks to a phone left off its hook, they begin to point fingers and worry about becoming too dependent on each other.
2023 version
Frasier plans a dinner party but instead overhears the conversation via a Zoom call that Niles failed to end correctly. The argument takes place in the same way, except Niles storms off to have a furious WhatsApp conversation with his friend about how unreasonable his brother is.
Season 3 Episode 6: Look Before You Leap
In this episode, Frasier encourages his friends and family to do something out of their comfort zone.
Daphne tries a new hairstyle with disastrous results, while Roz tries to reconnect with a past love only to find out he’s married. Martin takes a trip to Montana that ends in a scary emergency landing due to geese.
Meanwhile, Frasier prepares to sing an opera piece for the PBS pledge drive but ends up forgetting the lyrics and improvising with hilarious results. Despite not knowing the actual lyrics, Frasier’s improvised version of “Buttons and Bows” becomes a hit.
2023 version
Everyone carries out their tasks in a similar fashion, but Frasier is saved from his lyrics faux pax having saved them on his mobile phone rather than going through the trouble of finding a pen and paper. He still mispronounces them, though, to hilarious effect.
