Fans of the X-Men from their beginning in the early 1960’s probably remember the original “Magneto and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.” This was Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s creation to provide the first foils for their new mutant X-Men team. The original Brotherhood consisted of Magneto, the Master of Magnetism as the team’s leader. He was joined by two characters familiar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the Brother and Sister duo of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch. Another of the original members was the Toad. His mutant power was the gift of an incredible jumping ability and he wore a medieval costume. He was perhaps the weakest member of the new group. Rounding out the team was Mastermind, who had the power to create illusions of not only sight, but smell, taste, touch and sound.
It was later revealed that Magneto was the father of Wanda and Pietro (Quicksilver). Thus it probably came as a disappointment when they later left the Brotherhood and joined the Avengers. From that point on, the Brotherhood went through a number of different incarnations, some still lead by Magneto and some led by others, such as Mystique, Toad, Havok, and even Professor X.
Fast forward to the present and a new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, have been formed and they may be the most dangerous version of the team ever assembled.
SPOILER ALERT! This is the result of events chronicled in X-Men Blue # 34 by Cullen Bunn, Marcus To, and Matt Milla. For those who haven’t read it and want to, this is a good place to STOP. Unless you LIKE turning to the end of the book to see the results then by all means, follow along. This is the Readers Digest version of events. The recreation of the Brotherhood comes after a number of time jumps that Magneto makes during the issue. It is after he returns from seeing these different events that he decides that the only way to really protect fellow mutants is to be the man he was always meant to be and take his place back in command of his team. In realization of this, Magneto once again puts on his iconic costume, and assumes the leadership of his new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.
