It’s Halloween!

The best holiday of the year has come and there are so many things one can do today. Visit a Haunted House, go Trick or Treating with your kids, dress up your pets as pumpkins, or stay in to watch Halloween themed movies. There’s the obvious classics. I even wrote an article about my favorite films to watch around this time. If you are looking for a new and scary thriller to enjoy with the lights off, let me introduce you to Bullitt County. This 2018 independent film is available to watch on Netflix and while it doesn’t have any well-known actors in it, it is definitely a creepy and suspenseful movie to check out.

The Plot

Bullitt County centers around a group of friends coming together for one friend’s bachelor party. While Gordie has been sober for ten years, he still trails his college friends for a night on the town. Wondering now what to do with himself while his friends Robin and Keaton get drunk, Gordie hears about a local legend. He then enlists his friends Robin, Keaton, and Wayne to find the Bullitt Treasure, which is prohibition money buried somewhere in Bullitt County. What starts as a goof slowly turns into a defining moment for the group of friends, one that will forever change them.

While Bullitt County has that “low-budget” feel to it at times and the actors stumble a little awkwardly through their lines (at times), Bullitt County is still a worthwhile thriller to watch. There is something very wrong in the dynamic between Gordie, Keaton, and Robin that is felt early on in the movie and builds throughout the story. Things become very complicated once the friends are confronted with the real Bullitt family, who wonder why outsiders are looking for their treasures. Robin and Keaton soon find out that there is something building and raging into Gordie and the man who is supposed to be their friend ends up becoming their worst nightmare when he falls off the wagon.

Rating: 4/5

There is very much that thriller, “chase” element to this film that is done better than some other “slasher-esque” movies. I wouldn’t categorize this movie as a slasher film, but it’s what I would compare the style at times to. There are twists at the end of the movie that I did not expect, but when you look back on Bullitt County, it slowly makes sense.
