‘TITANS’ Review: It’s Dark, Flawed, And One Helluva Ride

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”7566″ img_size=”1000×550″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Let me start off by saying season  one of Titans is exactly what we have been waiting for. We have all waited for our favorite teens to come together in a live action show and it starts off with the introduction of Raven played by Teagan Croft. She is trying to figure out who she is and why she is having these nightmares about a tragic accident involving a family at a circus (who could that be). We get to see a different interpretation of the character, this one is a lot younger, which works perfectly as the episode begins and we see the series of events that led to Raven being on her own. But let’s not forget the demon trapped inside of her is dying to be let loose. I will say I wasn’t completely sold on the demonic side of her, there are some very dark moments involving her. I thought it was at times forced but Teagan does well enough for me to be able to get through it.

We then meet Dick Grayson who has completely left Gotham for Detroit but he didn’t leave his Robin persona behind as he works as a detective during the day and a big time ass kicker at night. Robin played by (Brenton Thwaites) is easily the steal of the show and my favorite character. I love how torn he is about moving on from Batman, he felt as though he was becoming way too similar to Bruce. And now he’s trying to create a life completely of his own. He is still very much a product of Bruce Wayne and you see that best when you get your first look at him in action and we see a Dick Grayson a bit more aggressive then we’ve seen him before but visually it is amazing.

Another thing I loved about season one is the chemistry between Brenton’s Robin and Teagans Raven.  He has become her protector and her big brother and it plays out very well on screen.

Now to someone I was cautious about going in to the show and that was Starfire played by Anna Diop. Now  don’t get me wrong Anna is a very good actress,  I just believed the character wasn’t written well enough and never really felt like she had good chemistry. Some complaints I have, her attitude and dialogue sometimes felt forced. Her look isn’t as bad as people made it out to be and when she becomes Starfire it’s really great to see on screen, she literally turned guys into piles of ash.

Now on to Hawk and Dove. Wow! Alan Ritchson and Minka Kelly completely kill it. They not only captured you with their action scenes but also with their chemistry as two people trying to get a score big enough to get them out of town and on to a better crime fighting free life. It doesn’t hurt that we get a love triangle with Dick Grayson and Dove. It shows almost every time we see Hawk and Robin interact not to mention Batman was not a fan of theirs and expressed to Dick to stay away from them. But like all teens he rebelled and fought crime with them anyway.

Speaking of which I love how in the background Batman and Bruce Wayne is. The show alludes to him and hashim as this shadowy figure but they never take away from the Titans which helps the characters grow with our fans being more intuned for when they will see Batman.

Now lastly I want to talk about our good friend Ryan Potter who plays Beast Boy. Let me say that Ryan absolutely nails it as Beast Boy.  They got his skin right and his transformations from the first time we see him makes you interested in his character. It’s a pretty sweet transformation and the CGI looked pretty good as well.  It plays true to the Beast Boy we know and love and I geeked out every time I saw him transform. The cgi was very well done overall and based on what we were told at the time of watching, the VFX were not complete, so I can only imagine how good it works now.

All in all Season one of Titans is worth the watch.  It has action, heart, grit, and love all wrapped up in one awesome bow. Like I said it does have some flaws but overall this is a great flagship show for the DC Universe and its one helluva ride.

Make sure you are all signed up for DC’s Streaming service and set your reminders for when Titans Officially airs every Friday starting on October 12th. And stay tuned because Titans has officially been renewed for a season two.
