For most of us, work takes a lot of mental load. We spend time thinking about work on the commute towards our jobs and on the way home from our jobs and while we’re out of our jobs. We think about work on the weekends when we are getting ready for our jobs to restart on Monday. It’s a lot of mental or physical strength to be able to get through the working day and really be able to get something out of it. Sometimes work can be very stressful depending on your industry, so you need ways to be able to let go of the day and unwind properly when you get home.

Not having that time can be stressful in itself because all you have left is stress. If you don’t find a way to unwind, whether that be sitting in front of the TV all evening or playing a few games of online roulette, you’re going to feel that stress build up and eventually that’s going to overtake you and burn you out. It can be tempting just to flick a movie on Netflix and stare blankly at the TV for a few hours before going to sleep, but that can become a little bit like Groundhog Day if you do that every time. You need a variety of ways to unwind after work and reclaim your time for yourself, and we’ve got some suggestions for you below.

    • Play a game. You can either sit in front of a computer and have a flutter with a great game of roulette or a game of poker, or you can grab a board game from the cupboard and sit with your family or friends and play a real game with real people. Of course, online games often connect you to real people these days, so there are a few strategy games you can play online that allow you to connect with other people around the world.Have fun at the same time. A lot of people like to play games because of the rush of endorphins that they get. That makes them happy while they play, especially when they win.
    • Draw yourself a very well earned bath. Now normally a bath wouldn’t be considered something fun to do in your spare time. A bath is a basic hygienic need, so it’s a type of self-care that you should be doing on a regular basis anyway. But we all know that there is a difference between a quick shower to wash your body and a luxurious bath with salts, oils, bubble bars, a book, a caddy with a drink and a snack, and low lighting. Filling your tub with a mountain of bubbles and sprinkling some salt into the water is going to help you to unwind whether you like it or not. No matter how stressful your day has been, you’re always going to find great joy in unwinding in a bubble bath.
    • Something creative. If your job makes you sit at a computer all day, then do a hobby with your hands. Knit with a movie on in the background or sketch with some music playing. Sculpt something or join a class that allows you to sculpt something with other people. You could even get your friends together and go to a paint and sip class where you follow along and paint but you bring your own bottle of wine to unwind with. It’s a great giggle. It’s a social activity and if you don’t want it to be social. You could do something creative at home.
    • Go for drinks after work. You don’t have to go home after work and stay inside in front of the TV if you don’t want to. In fact, if you’ve got the spare time, you could go for a drink or even a dinner with some of your coworker friends. If you don’t want to go with your coworkers, you can call up your other friends and meet them at a restaurant for a meal. You can talk about the day and have a good vent. Or you could avoid the topic of work altogether and just let your hair down for a few hours. There’s nothing stopping you from meeting friends after work. Just because you’ve got somewhere to go before you start it all again, all over again the next day doesn’t mean you can’t have fun.
    • Go out for a walk. Again, you don’t have to go home after work if you don’t want to. You can go for a walk and choose somewhere in nature to go and enjoy the fresh air. Even just a quick walk around the local park can be more than enough.
