Universal Hires ‘Nomadland’ Director Chloé Zhao For A Fresh Take On Dracula

Chloé  Zhao is fresh off her groundbreaking nomination as the first woman of Asian descent to be nominated for a best directing Golden Globe and she has wasted no time signing on for her next project.

Zhao has signed on to direct, write, and produce a new re-imagining of ‘Dracula‘ for Universal, it will be made under her production company: Highwaymen.  While details of the project are being kept secret it has been described as a “original, futuristic, sci-fi western’. Zhao particularly is excited to add her signature touches of exploring the concepts of isolation and being an outsider. she stated:

“I’ve always been fascinated by vampires and the concept of the Other they embody. I’m very excited to work with Donna, Peter and the team at Universal to reimagine such a beloved character.”

This is the continuation of Universal’s approach to filmmaker-driven adaptations of the classic monster flicks that the studio became famous for in the 1930-1950’s, which started with 2020’s surprise hit ‘The Invisible Man’.

Fans of Zhao should seek out her film ‘Nomadland‘ as it earns massive praise and is continuing to rake in awards nominations. And, if you are wanting to see how she will work as a studio/big budget filmmaker then you can look forward to her foray into the MCU with ‘Eternals‘ which is set to be released on November 5th of this year.

How excited are you for the continuation of Universal’s Monsters universe and to see the growth of Chloé  Zhao’s impressive filmography?
