A while ago DC announced that they were moving forward with plans to make a ‘Blue Beetle‘ film and had chosen to follow the Jaime Reyes incarnation of the hero. Which makes this the first movie for DC to star a Latino character. and we now know who will be directing the film.

According to The Wrap, Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) has been chosen to helm the movie. He will be paired with Mexican-born writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer to handle the films screenplay.  Soto had this to say:

“It is an honor to direct blue beetle, the first Latino superhero film for DC…I want to sincerely thank everyone at Warner Bros. and DC for trusting me to bring Jaime Reyes to life. I can’t wait to make history together.”

The character of Blue Beetle has had quite an interesting history. he began as a property of Fox comics in 1939 before they went out of business. He was subsequently obtained by Charlton comics in the 1950s until they too went out of business and he was finally picked up by DC comics in the 1980s where he has remained ever since. He has seen three different owners of the ‘Blue Beetle’ title. Dan Garrett, a police officer who gained superpowers through experimental vitamins (later being reimagined as an archaeologist). Ted Kord, and athlete and inventor. And finally Jaime Reyes, who was introduced in 2006.

We already know who the perfect actor for the role is as well.

The film is set to begin production in the fall of this year, so more casting news can be expected over the next few months.

How excited are you to see the first Latino superhero brought to life by DC?
