‘What If…?’ Episode Seven Review: Party Thor Delivers With a Much-Needed Laugh

After several rather depressing episodes, I think we all needed a laugh. Like with many of these episodes, we’re taken back to Phase One with this week’s story. This one centers around Thor and if he had been an only child. Meaning, what if Odin had decided not to take Loki to Asgard. Now, right away I will say that these episodes (this one particular) seem to operate on a more positive note than the live-action MCU. In the movie Thor it’s pretty much explained that Loki was thrown away as a baby and not wanted by Laufey – but, in this episode, it seems that everything is all good with the family. That’s just a little quip I have, but it’s not a big deal.

In this world, Thor doesn’t have Loki around and therefore, he becomes a bit of a party boy. I think we saw in the first Thor that Thor likes to let loose, but without his brother around, Thor really has no one watching over him. So, like a teenager when the parents are out of town, Thor wants to have a party while his dad is in an “Odinsleep” and his mom is with friends. Where does Thor decide to throw this rager? Earth, of course. While at first, it seems like having a bunch of gods and aliens around to have the world’s biggest rave isn’t such a bad idea, we get the gist that things could go south if the party rages on.

When the Party Has to End

Thor’s whole theme this episode should have been the Beastie Boys’ anthem “Fight For Your Right to Party” and it’s pretty cool who we see called upon to break up the party. At first, you may think of Captain Marvel as a party pooper (their words, not mine), but it’s pretty obvious why Thor’s time on Earth (in this episode) should be cut short. At first, I thought the concept was a little silly and everything was just too conveniently light-hearted, but just like with the second episode, I enjoyed seeing all these normally serious characters let loose and have fun. My favorite parts came from all of the “who’s who” in this episode, especially Jotun Loki. Jane seemed a little too starstruck, but again, I’ll suspend belief just for the fun of it.

Rating: 4.5/5

While I overall enjoyed this episode (especially the fact that everyone seems afraid of Frigga), I wish these episodes would stop cutting short. There’s always a twist at the last second and I really hope we get to see more of this world’s episode. Besides that, I really enjoyed this episode and I’m going to be thinking about what it’d be like to party with Thor for a while.
