American Gods just dropped its season three finale the other day. You can read my review for the season finale here. While the Starz series (that’s based on Neil Gaiman’s 2001 book) ended their third season on a massive cliffhanger, the show hasn’t been renewed for a season four yet. This is very different from the previous season, where American Gods had been renewed for a season three while airing season two. This makes me a little nervous and I have several reasons as to why Starz needs to renew American Gods for a fourth season.
THAT Cliffhanger
As I mentioned before, American Gods season three ended on a massive cliffhanger. We see Shadow Moon sitting vigil for Mr. Wednesday – something Odin requested in the first episode of the series. Back then, especially if you haven’t read the book; you had no idea what that actually meant. Now we do. We know that Shadow essentially had to sacrifice himself once Odin was killed so Odin could “return to his full and former glory”. This is a story that has to continue. Not only do we need to know what Odin plans to do now that he’s “back to his old self”, but what this means for Shadow? Is this the end for our lead?
In addition to this, we also have Technical Boy learning who he really is. The God of Technology, who we all thought was a fairly new addition to the god collection; is in fact human innovation personified. Making him probably one of the oldest gods there is. Having found this out, we need more – we can’t just let the story end there. We have to find out what Tech Boy now does with this information. We also have to find out what is going on with Mr. World…they were very close to revealing something that book fans know all about.
In addition, Bilquis and Laura Moon are seemingly teaming up. throughout the show, Laura has teamed up with Mad Sweeney, Salim, and Liam Doyle. But, Laura teaming up with the goddess is even more intriguing than her past partners. What does this mean for American Gods? This is uncharted territory – the two characters never even met in the book. So, where is this all going?
There’s Only One Season-Worth Of Story to Tell
Lakeside is essentially the climax of the book, with the rest talking about the fallout and wrapping everything up. So, there’s only one season-worth of story left to tell. Why cancel a show when it literally only as one season left to go? American Gods is not a ten-season show – it was always meant to complete the book and that’s it. So, now that we’re on track for that, give us a fourth and final season. Make it six episodes even. I’m not picky, I just want the story to have an opportunity to finish itself as opposed to getting canceled.
