Wynonna Earp premiered on the SYFY in 2016 and while it may not have had a great budget and was campy at times, there’s no denying that it was a great show. Combining the legendary gunslinging lore of the wild west days with the supernatural, it was a fun show that had dedicated talent behind it, and a passionate fanbase that would not allow it to be forgotten. After rallying cries and a lot of time passing, Wynonna Earp got its fourth and final season, and we all thought that was it.
Until Wynonna Earp: Vengeance. We Earpers were blessed with the announcement of a 90-minute special on Tubi and this goes to show just how much these people love their fans that they would even make Wynonna’s return home on a place where everyone can watch it for free. Welcome home, Wynonna, let’s get into this review.
Some time has passed since the end of the show and we’re on a new network, but Vengeance feels like coming home. Melanie Scrofano slides back into the role of Wynonna Earp with such ease that it really does feel like coming home. The chemistry between Scrofano and Tim Rozon’s Doc Holliday is just as palpable now as it was in season one. You can’t help, but smile when you see Rozon return as the fastest gunslinger in the west – he’s just too damn good.
Vengeance was not afraid, however; to take chances. The beginning scene opened up in a bit of a shocking and gory fashion, showing that this movie did not come to play. Now, I do want to get into some major spoilers because I want to make some comparisons to another show that came back after years of being off air, only to disappoint the legacy and characters people loved.
Major Spoilers
Veronica Mars was another show that had a dedicated fandom and when the show returned for a miniseason back in 2019 on Hulu, people were stoked. That was until the main character was essentially made insufferable and the show killed off Logan in such a flippant manner, it showed fans that the writers really didn’t care about a character that fans came to know and love.
Now, Wynonna Earp could have kept it at four seasons and have our happy ending. And, while there were some bumps in the road for Wynonna and Doc in Vengeance, it ultimately felt real and raw for a couple who have not only been through a lot, but who have been together for so long. It was done with respect and love, as opposed to the immature way the writers handled Veronica and Logan in Veronica Mars.
So, when it came to killing off Doc Holliday, it was sad. Oh, of course; it was sad. But…it was beautiful. Doc didn’t get blown up off-screen, he died in the arms of the woman he loved. It was emotional and raw and Melanie and Tim definitely made people cry with their acting. Now, listen, there is an interview with Rozon (Buzzfeed) where Rozon acknowledged that it is a Sci-Fi show and anything can happen. I don’t think we should hold our breaths, but hey – again, it was bittersweet and done with care for the character.
It’s Good to Be an Earper
So, let’s loop back around. Everyone else was great as well. Seeing Katherine Barrell return as Nicole Haught and Dominique Provost-Chalkley as Waverly Earp was great. Forget Destiel, WayHaught is the cornerstone of a good fandom. When Waverly and Nicole hugged Wynonna to welcome her home, it felt like they were hugging the viewers. Welcome home, everyone, this one is for you. It’s nice to see a showrunner and writers and actors who actually care about their fans and love what they do – it’s tangible throughout the entire special.
In the end, Wynonna Earp: Vengeance felt like another arc in the Wynonna Earp show. It was gory, supernatural, fun, emotional, and reminded all of us that this was a great show. What was ever the deal with ending it? Anyway, if you’re an Earper and you want more Earpy goodness, Vengeance delivers. It does not disappoint and best of all, does not tarnish the original, which so many revivals do nowadays.
Wynonna Earp: Vengeance is available on Tubi now!
