Book Review: ‘Raised by Cats’ Is A Love Letter to The Fur Babies Who Touched Us

There is something really incredible about the bond between a human and a cat. Throughout my life, I’ve been surrounded by a lot of generalizations about cats. Both people in my life and on TV have called cats unpersonable. Inferior to dogs. Mean. Most often, it feels like people treat cats as lifeless pieces of furniture, while treating dogs as if they’re human babies. Don’t get me wrong, I love my dog, but I also love my cats. It was only until I got a cat of my own that I realized how wrong people are. Cats have their own amazing little personalities and are full of life.

    A Love Letter

KJ McGlinn is a like-minded individual who is actually the host of the podcast online show KJ Today, as well as the host of the Kinda Nerdy Girls (friends of Geek Vibes Nation). Like me, KJ and her husband Patrick aka Patches have many cats and appreciate the life and love cats offer. Because she’s so passionate about these feline cuties, she penned an extremely personal novel called Raised by Cats: Behind the Mic and the Meows.

Raised by Cats is a short book, but is full of adoration, nostalgic memories, heartbreaking loss, and tips for new and old cat owners. It is written in a way that feels extremely personal – like it’s written by an old friend, who is reminiscing on her experiences with the cats who came along the way. At the same time, it is a professional novel – an easy read that isn’t lacking in feline knowledge.

    A Personal Experience

It’s a beautiful book that really makes sure to show how much KJ was touched by cats throughout her life. Throughout the book, she talks about many milestones in her life. Her major jobs, getting married, and more. And cats are always there. I’m amazed at the documentation and love that she has had for each cat, though; there were many. The book is littered (cat pun) with pictures of each kitty and the different personalities each had. There’s even sad stories, of lessons KJ needed to learn – that most of us, who have never had animals before; have to learn. I may have definitely cried a few times.

Raised by Cats is a lovely read that I suggest for anyone who loves cats. Whether you’ve had one, ten, or are only just thinking of getting one, it’s nice to see someone speak so highly of our feline friends. In a world where many people unfortunately think of cats as dumb and don’t bother to do much else other than put down a food dish, I love seeing another person who appreciates these beautiful creatures for who they are.
