[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”17340″ img_size=”900×500″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Captain Marvel just premiered yesterday, but for me and some fortunate others, we were able to view Marvel’s latest film and the first female-led superhero movie within the MCU early. Meaning, I’ve had time to digest the movie and really think it over and the conclusion that I have really come to, is that I absolutely adored Ben Mendelsohn as the leader of the Skrulls, Talos. Frankly, I enjoyed the entire film, but much like Loki, it’s the “bad guy” in this that really drove the movie home for me.
Minor Spoilers
Like Carol Danvers, we are to believe that the Skrulls are the bad guys in Captain Marvel. And they are, generally. We’re even finding out of the possibility of the “Secret Invasion” storyline coming to the MCU because of how the movie set up the Skrulls. So, these shapeshifting beings could cause a lot of trouble within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and who knows if Kevin Feige is setting up that one of our favorites heroes was a Skrull all along.
Talos leads his group of Skrulls down to Earth and we can already see how tricky a war against these beings would be. Not only did one Skrull disguise as Phil Coulson to where Fury couldn’t decipher that it wasn’t the real Coulson, but Talos himself disguised himself as Nick Fury’s boss. The Skrulls has certainly gotten their hands dirty and with their ability to blend in masterfully, it would be hard to see who you can trust.
Perhaps one of the most “on the edge of your seat” moment with Talos is when he is in Monica’s home, with one of his Skrulls out with Monica’s daughter – pretending to be Monica. We can see that Talos is a master of any situation he’s in, completely toying with Carol and the others into not attacking, as there would surely be consequences if they did. I do not mean to keep making Loki references, but just as Tom Hiddleston played Loki almost a little playful and how he commanded the audience’s attention in every scene he was in, the same can be said of Mendelsohn as Talos. He was completely compelling.
We then find out that Talos has an ulterior motive, one that I don’t think any of us saw coming. Since Captain Marvel just came out, I don’t want to ruin the twist in the movie, but it certainly offers a different side to Talos. I had thought that maybe he was tricking Carol and the others, after all; the Skrulls are the bad guys. But, in this story, it ended up being the Kree who were the real tyrants, forcing Captain Marvel to renounce her alliance to the species that had taken her in six years prior.
It’s completely fair to say that Marvel picked the right person to play Talos. Everything from his mannerisms to his voice completely drew me in and really made me believe that if the powers that be wanted to bring him back, it would be a smart decision – especially for a Secret Invasion storyline down the line. With Loki presumably out of the MCU (though will have his own show on Disney+), Mendelsohn’s Talos would be the perfect person to pick up the torch. He’s completely charismatic, personable, and can switch between being completely dangerous, to helping out, while also having tricks up his sleeve.
All in all, this was just a shameless post of me wanting to rave about Mendelsohn, because out of all the great characters in Captain Marvel, he was the stand-out for me. And that’s the tea, kids.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
