We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Senior Director of Communications Chris Woolsey to preview some of the the exciting titles they have coming to the service in March. Check out our conversation below to not only learn what is newly available, but why you should be excited! A full list of titles debuting in March is available at the end of this article.
GVN: We are here today to discuss a variety of different brands you are overseeing under the Chicken Soup For The Soul Entertainment umbrella. You have a lot of great stuff coming up, but I know Crackle is like your baby. There are so many things to get excited about including the fourth season of an ongoing Crackle Original Going For Broke. Tell us a bit of background about the series and what fans can expect from the fourth season.
Chris: The show is co-produced by Ashton Kutcher and Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment. And this series was born out of his conversations with his mentor, Dan Rosensweig, who’s the CEO of Chegg. They were talking about the sort of the epidemic debt crisis in this country and what could be done about it.
And Ashton was like, “If there was only a way that we could make learning the basics of finance fun, I really think that we could make a change in this country.” And Dan was like, “Let’s do it.” So they put their heads together and got together with our team from Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment.
The series was born and has done incredibly well for us. It’s pretty amazing to see once these kind of solid financial choices are made in people’s lives that it really is life changing. You see the difference in their lives from the beginning of the episode where they’re just drowning in debt and don’t even know where to turn. Then, by the end of it, they are getting their feet on stable ground and they understand their situation and the choices that they need to make in order to have a healthy financial future. The kind of tagline of the show is “Become the CEO of your own life.” And that’s exactly what people come away with.
The great thing about this show is that it helps not only the participants on the show, but also the audience because they can take the very same lessons that are learned in every episode by the participants and they can apply those to their own lives.
GVN: You have a variety of different sci-fi options that I wanted to talk about. First, this is pretty insane, you have the complete series of Farscape coming to your service. How did you snag that? What is going on over there?
Chris: We have this programming team that I’m not sure how they do it – I think they have things on people and they just call ’em up and they go, “Look, we know what you did last summer and you’ve gotta give us all of these series” because they come up with the most amazing finds. This is a perfect example.
Farscape was such an interesting series, obviously partnered with the Jim Henson Company. The kind of puppetry and practical effects that show had was really revolutionary for its time. I’m dating myself, but when I was younger watching that, it was in stark contrast to everything else, which was all CG and a lot of them lower budget.
It came across that they weren’t spending the money on the CGI – it didn’t look great. This series was so different because it was all these practical effects that were being created by the Henson Company. Not only is the writing and the performances fantastic, but the characters and the puppets that were used in this series are just amazing.
GVN: That’s incredible! One thing I wanted to say about Farscape in particular – I’m a huge physical media fan. I remember whenever I was really collecting a lot of seasons on DVD when I was younger, Farscape was like probably about a hundred dollars per season and there are multiple seasons. I wish I had Crackle back then so I could avoid forking over an arm and a leg just to watch some great sci-fi. We’re living in a golden age where people can just turn on Crackle and have the complete series of Farscape at their fingertips. It’s wild.
Chris: It’s pretty awesome. I know I was super geeked out when we got this because, unlike you, I was unwilling to plunk down a hundred dollars per season and so I actually had not seen the show since it originally aired.
Although, there were many a day that I wanted to but didn’t have access. So yeah, to your point, it’s a wonderful leveling of the playing field as it were to be able to give fans access to something that otherwise they wouldn’t be able to watch.
GVN: Continuing along that track, I recently had the pleasure of revisiting the ‘80s classic Highlander on 4K UHD. I had so much fun revisiting it, but for people who maybe haven’t watched it in a while or want to sample it before potentially buying it, it is now going to be on Crackle.
Chris: I am a gigantic fan. When I was in high school, we used to get together like a lot of friends do on weekends and watch movies. We had this one buddy who had a better job than the rest of us, so it was always his job to go rent the movies and then bring them over to our house – my buddy Mike.
He would show up with Highlander like two nights outta three. We loved the movie, but there are other films out there. But because he was the one with the better job, we were watching Highlander. We watched it so many times, and then I watched it again recently and I’ve gotta say it holds up incredibly well. Everything about that movie is just so great. The effects, the writing, the performances, obviously they got amazing actors: Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, Clancy Brown – who’s chilling.
GVN: Insane. I love his performance in that.
Chris: All these guys are just always good. Christopher Lamber from Mortal Kombat. Sean Connery – some of the most iconic scenes in his career outside of the Bond films. Even if people had watched it back in the day, they need to go back and visit this one again because it’s a classic for sure.
GVN: Absolutely. Another overlooked series in my opinion that I got to revisit last year on Blu-Ray is one that you have coming to Crackle – the RoboCop TV series. Yes, there is a RoboCop TV series. If fans don’t wanna fork over money or at least want to sample a few episodes just to dip their toes in, they can do so on Crackle.
Chris: I’m with you. I love camp, and, it’s so campy. People argue which iteration of the Robocop movies this one best lines up with, and I get a RoboCop 3 vibe out of it.
I love it. Richard Eden, who was best known for Santa Barbara, the adult nighttime drama, which is so funny and in a weird way fit perfectly. Santa Barbara is cheesy, RoboCop is kind of campy and cheesy. It’s really great. Yvette Nipar from 21 Jump Street. So many eighties and nineties staples in there. Blu Mankuma from 2012, which that’s just one of the greatest names in Hollywood history. I think fans are gonna really appreciate this.
GVN: There are also many great options coming to Chicken Soup for the Soul. We’ve talked in the past, you know I’m a documentary fan. You have one that really piques my interest, the new film Quant. Can you give our audience a little bit of rundown of why they need to know about this important figure?
Chris: I had no idea what in the world this was about. I knew it was a documentary, but I just dove in. And it’s really interesting. It’s about Mary Quant, who invented the miniskirt. And you think, “Really? A movie about someone who invented the miniskirt. How is that sustained for 90 minutes?” It’s pretty amazing when you look and see what this woman did.
By creating the miniskirt, there were so many social ramifications. Previous to that, no one had done anything like that in terms of women being able to express their sexuality through their clothing. Most skirts at the time were well below the knee, and so she was the first one to not only say, let’s take it above the knee, but let’s take it way above the knee.
And she was unashamed about the reason she did that. She wanted women to be looked at and to feel good about the way they look. She also created a lot of other things that you’ll learn about like the makeup compact and things like that.
The film is directed by Sadie Frost, who was actually Lucy in Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula when she was younger, and has since gone on to become a producer and a director. She lives in England and is a really, really talented director. This is a phenomenal documentary and it gives people a look into the fashion industry that I think they’ll appreciate. It has more to do with society and sociology than it does just about fashion.
GVN: I see that season three of Funny Girls is coming to the service this month. Can you tell us about the creative team behind this comedic series?
Chris: This is a series from New Zealand, and we have all three seasons. This is a sketch comedy series, and a lot of names in there were on their way up at the time – they were new to the scene. They’d been doing comedy for a number of years in New Zealand, but hadn’t quite become international names yet. You look and you see Rose Matafeo from Starstruck and Jackie Van Beek, who was in one of my favorites, What We Do In The Shadows.
It’s a sketch comedy series that’s a little unusual because there is a through storyline to it. It’s about a group of female comedians who are trying to make a sketch comedy show about women in an entertainment field that’s dominated by men. There’s all these really hilarious sketches and interstitials that stitch every episode together where you see the women trying to overcome various setbacks.
