Curt Pires has never been a creator who colors inside the lines, and with Oni Press SUPER MONDO MEGA MUTTS, he doesn’t just step outside the box—he blows it up, rebuilds it out of neon foam, and straps jet engines to the sides. Teaming with artist Juan Gedeon, Pires unleashes a hyper‑charged, sugar‑rush adventure that fuses Saturday‑morning‑cartoon chaos with razor‑sharp satire and a beating heart big enough to wag a tail.
The result is a world where the absurd becomes sincere, the sincere becomes hilarious, and a pack of over‑amped, over‑adorable canine heroes barrels headfirst into danger with the kind of reckless optimism only Pires could weaponize. It’s loud, it’s bright, it’s weird in all the right ways—and it’s unmistakably Curt Pires.
In this conversation, Pires digs into the creative alchemy behind the book: the tonal tightrope walk, the collaborative energy with Charm, and the joy of building a universe where anything can happen and usually does. SUPER MONDO MEGA MUTTS isn’t just a comic—it’s a full‑throttle experience, and Pires is more than ready to take readers along for the ride. So, let’s welcome back writer Curt Pires to GVN Talking Comics.
GVN: Thank you for chatting with us again, Curt. It’s a pleasure catching up with you again. We last spoke about your Comixology Originals book, Stillman, with Sunando C., and are pleased to discuss your latest endeavor.
SUPER MONDO MEGA MUTTS
So, without further ado, let’s talk about your new book. What was the first moment you knew SUPER MONDO MEGA MUTTS needed to exist — was it a character, a joke, a visual, or something stranger?
CURT: I really wanted to do a book featuring dogs, but not have it be just another sad animals book. I wanted to do something bombastic and funny and larger than life. I got to thinking more and more and more about the idea, and eventually it evolved into SMMM—the sort of bastard child of Area X, TMNT and WE3.

When Artist Meets the Story
GVN: How long has this idea been bouncing around in your brain, and what finally pushed it into full‑blown comic form?
CURT: Meeting Hunter at SDCC and telling him the idea, and him suggesting we go after Juan to draw the book. I could see the book start to come into focus. Like all great comics, the right artist makes it reality.
Emotional Themes or Threads
GVN: Beneath the humor and action, were there any themes or emotional threads that you felt were important for you to explore?
CURT: The book is super bombastic, but at the core these are dogs—pups—and we really wanted to explore the bonds they have with their humans, so that’s really at the core of the book.
Artist Juan Gedeon
GVN: How did your collaboration with talented artist Juan Gedeon begin, and what made him the perfect artistic partner for this project?
CURT: Juan is the Norman Rockwell of steroidal dogs—so once we got him we knew the book would be killer. Juan and I are closely collaborating—deviating from script at points to perfect and give each moment what it needs—and then I’ll go back and rewrite.
Juan’s Artistic Surprise
GVN: As a follow-up, were there moments where Juan’s art surprised you or pushed the story in a new direction?
CURT: Absolutely—Juan’s work is so bombastic and cinematic, it really makes the work exciting and brings it to life.
Working with Oni Press
GVN: You are working with Oni Press on this project. What made Oni Press the right home for a series with this much chaos, color, and canine energy?
CURT: I was really impressed with the work they were doing with Nacelle on that line. And I truly think SMMM can be bigger than TMNT, so I wanted a partner who not only would understand the book creatively, but help me bring the idea to life in many other mediums

Upcoming Projects
GVN: Thank you for a small part of your day, Curt. Before we go, I want to give you a chance to share any other upcoming projects you have.
CURT: Fireborn and Lost Fantasy are going strong at image. And I’ll be launching my first kickstarter, The Objectivist very soon. Follow along here:
