Earlier this year, the entertainment world buzzed with news as James Gunn officially announced Milly Alcock’s casting as Kara Zor-El, popularly known as Supergirl, in the expansive DC Universe. The House of the Dragon star is set to add her own flair to the iconic character, joining a list of talented actors who have embraced the role. Notably, Melissa Benoist, who brought Supergirl to life in the Arrowverse, recently shared her thoughts on Alcock’s casting, emphasizing the value of diverse interpretations of this beloved superhero.
In a candid conversation with Screen Rant, Benoist expressed her belief that every take on Supergirl is valuable, citing the character’s enduring iconic status since the 1950s. According to Benoist, “I think any and all takes on the character are valuable because of what she stands for. Supergirl as an entity is iconic for a reason and has been since the ’50s. I personally think that every iteration of her is valuable for young women to see, and hopefully [with] every take on her, someone will see themselves in it.”
The origin story of Supergirl, crafted by Otto Binder and Al Plastino in 1959’s Action Comics #252, introduces Kara Zor-El as the cousin of Superman, sent to Earth from the doomed planet Krypton. Her superhero journey began in 1962, and despite a dramatic exit during the 1985 Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, the legacy of Supergirl continued with various characters, including Linda Danvers, Cir-El, and the resurrected Kara herself in 2004.
Supergirl’s presence extends beyond the comic pages, with numerous onscreen adaptations in film, television, and animated projects. From Helen Slater’s portrayal in the 1984 film Supergirl to Sasha Calle’s recent appearance in The Flash movie, the character has evolved with each interpretation.
Looking ahead, the anticipation for the upcoming project, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, is building. While specific details like the release date and director remain under wraps, it is confirmed that Ana Nogueira is the creative force behind the film’s script. Interestingly, Nogueira was initially attached to an earlier version of a Supergirl movie, tied to The Flash’s narrative. Although that particular project took a different direction, Gunn and Safran were impressed with Nogueira’s work, leading to her securing an overall DC writing deal.
Expressing his excitement on social media, Gunn welcomed Nogueira to the DC Studios family, praising her screenplay adaptation of Woman of Tomorrow as “above and beyond anything I hoped it would be.” This unique take on Supergirl promises a captivating, star-spanning narrative, adding another layer to the rich tapestry of the DC Universe.
